Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the  Constitution gives utmost importance to human dignity, equality and liberty.

Every year, India observes Constitution Day, also known as "Samvidhan Divas", on November 26 to celebrate the adoption of the Indian Constitution.

In a post on X, the PM wrote, "On Constitution Day, we pay tribute to the framers of our Constitution. Their vision and foresight continue to motivate us in our pursuit of building a Viksit Bharat."

PM Modi said while the Constitution empowers Indians with rights, it also reminds them of their duties as citizens. "These duties are the foundation of a strong democracy. Let us reiterate our commitment to strengthening Constitutional values through our actions," he said.

India is celebrating its 76th Constitution Day, also known as Samvidan Divas, with a special event at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan.

Earlier, the PM also wrote to the citizens of India on the occasion of Constitution Day, recalling the historic adoption of the Constitution in 1949 and underlining its enduring role in guiding the nation’s progress.

He highlighted how the Constitution has empowered individuals from humble backgrounds to serve the nation at the highest levels, sharing his own experiences of reverence towards Parliament and the Constitution. He recalled bowing at the steps of Parliament in 2014 and placing the Constitution on his forehead in 2019 as a mark of respect. He emphasised that the Constitution has given countless citizens the power to dream and the strength to realize those dreams.

He recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s belief that rights flow from the performance of duties, stressing that fulfilling duties is the foundation of social and economic progress.

He also also stressed the responsibility of strengthening democracy by exercising the right to vote.

"Our Constitution has given us the right to vote. As citizens, it is our duty to never miss the opportunity to vote in national, state and local elections where we are registered. In order to inspire others, we can think of organising special ceremonies every 26th November in schools and colleges to celebrate those youngsters who are turning 18. This way our first-time voters will feel that in addition to being students, they are also active participants in the process of nation-building," he said.

According to PM Modi, if the  youth is inspired with a sense of responsibility and pride, they will remain committed to the values of democracy throughout their lives. "This sense of commitment is the foundation of a strong nation," he said.

India will celebrate its 76th Constitution Day with a special event at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan. The event will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, and Members of Parliament.

The President will lead the reading of the preamble of the Constitution. The proceedings will also feature the release of the Constitution in nine translated languages and the launch of a commemorative booklet titled 'Art and Calligraphy in India's Constitution'. The transcript notes that November 26 marks the day the Constitution was adopted in 1949 and has been observed as Constitution Day since 2015.
