The government on Saturday announced India and Pakistan mutually agreed to stop all military action following DGMO-level talks with the neighbouring country, adding that all firing and military action were halted at 5 pm IST.
"DGMO of Pakistan called India's DGMO at 3.35pm. It was agreed between them that both sides will stop all firing and military action on land, air and sea with effect from 5 pm (IST). Instructions given to both sides to give effect to this understanding. The DGMOs will talk again on May 12 at 12 pm," said Foreign Minister Vikram Misri.
According to top government sources, the cessation of firing and military action between India and Pakistan was mutually agreed upon following direct communication between the two nations. The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan initiated the call earlier this afternoon, during which both sides held discussions and reached an understanding to halt hostilities.
Sources clarified that this agreement is strictly limited to stopping military escalation, and no decision has been taken to hold talks on any other issues or at any other venue.
The government sources also asserted that equating the cessation of military action with "ceasefire" would not be the correct conclusion. "Communication would be set up, and DGMOs would talk further," they said.
The announcement by Misri came shortly after US President Donald Trump announced ceasefire between the two countries in talks mediated by the United States.
"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
The military confrontation between India and Pakistan intensified on the intervening night of May 9 and 10 as India foiled Islamabad's continued missile and drone attacks in failed attempts to target military installations and religious places across Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Rajasthan. The Indian Armed Forces targeted several air bases of Pakistan in late-night strikes.
