A former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has claimed that Sandip Ghosh -- who resigned as the principal following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor on the institute’s premises -- was involved in several illegal activities including the selling of unclaimed bodies, trafficking medical waste as well as taking bribes from students.
In an interview with News18, Akhtar Ali alleged that Ghosh ran a nexus from the hospital, earning lakhs from illegal activities. Ali had raised an alarm about the illegal activities before the vigilance department among others about Ghosh in 2023 but no action was taken. Instead, he was transferred from RG Kar Hospital for being the whistle blower.
“I have lodged a complaint against Ghosh. He was a criminal and would earn lakhs from this hospital. Nobody listened to me then. Now, I will also approach the court,” he said.
Allegations against Ghosh:
Ali, while speaking to News18, revealed that Ghosh sold bio-medical waste, such as gloves and syringes, to his Bangladeshi contacts. This was in stark opposition of the rules which state that such waste can only be handed out to authorised centres for proper disposal and recycling.
The former deputy superintendent also accused the former principal of selling unclaimed dead bodies apart from pocketing a 20 per cent commission for all hospital tenders. “He would take money from students who had failed to make them pass the exams. Several students were victims of this scandal,” he alleged.
In a separate interview with India Today, Ali said the accused in the case, Sanjoy Roy, was part of the former principal's security.
The allegations came as the Kolkata Police on August 20 began an investigation against Ghosh for his alleged involvement in "financial irregularities" in the state-run health facility, a senior officer told PTI. The probe against Ghosh commenced after a four-member SIT was constituted to investigate the alleged financial irregularities at the hospital.
On August 9, the body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested in connection with the crime the next day. Later, the Calcutta High Court handed over the case to the CBI.
