Cyclone Dana Landfall Live: Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways takes precautionary measures

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) on Thursday said it has initiated comprehensive safety measures to safeguard ports, vessels, and personnel in response to cyclone Dana.

Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways Shantanu Thakur, chaired a detailed review meeting to assess the preparedness of the Ministry, the Directorate General of Shipping, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Paradip Port is also ensuring the safety of essential equipment in under-construction areas and securing high mast lights, loading arms, and gangways.

The Chairman and Deputy Chairman of Kolkata Port and Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port have also been advised to maintain full preparedness despite the expected lesser impact of Cyclone Dana in the region

ISRO on Thursday said its satellites have been tracking the cyclonic storm 'Dana' that is approaching the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal, providing real-time data to aid disaster management efforts.

It said, polar orbiting satellite EOS-06 and geostationary satellite INSAT-3DR are regularly providing valuable information on the cyclone status.

"Cyclonic Storm 'DANA' is approaching the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal. ISRO's EOS-06 and INSAT-3DR satellites have been tracking the storm since October 20, providing real-time data to aid disaster management efforts," the national space agency said in a post on 'X'.

Cyclone Dana Landfall Live: Here are the steps Bengal, Odisha govts have taken to ensure safety of citizens

Authorities in Odisha and West Bengal evacuated lakhs of people, shut schools, cancelled more than 400 trains and suspended flight operations as they braced on Thursday for severe cyclonic storm Dana, which is expected to make landfall in Odisha past midnight at a speed of 120kmph.

The Odisha government has deployed 385 rescue teams comprising 19 NDRF teams, ODRAF (51), Fire Service (220), and Forest staff (95). This apart, as many as 150 platoons of Odisha Police personnel have been pressed into service.

The East Coast Railways cancelled 203 trains passing or originating through Odisha even as flight services remained suspended at the Biju Patnaik International Airport here for 16 hours from 5 pm of Thursday. Bus services have also been halted till the cyclone passes the state.

In West Bengal, the state administration evacuated over 2.5 lakh people to safety.

The South Eastern Railway (SER), which oversees routes in West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand, has cancelled more than 170 express and passenger trains scheduled between October 23 and 27.

In addition, Eastern Railway cancelled 68 suburban trains in the Howrah division for Friday morning, while all EMU local trains from Sealdah station were suspended from Thursday evening through Friday morning. Kolkata Port authorities also halted ship movements until Friday evening as a precautionary measure.

Operations at Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport were suspended from 6 pm on Thursday until 9 am on Friday due to expected high winds and heavy rain.

Parts of Jharkhand could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from Thursday night under the influence of cyclonic storm Dana, a Met Department official said.

An 'orange' alert has been issued for the Kolhan region (West Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharswan and East Singhbhum districts) for Friday, he said.

"Apart from heavy rain, the region might also experience thunderstorms and gusty winds with speeds of up to 60 kmph," Ranchi Meteorological Centre in-charge Abhishek Anand said.

With Cyclone Dana forecast to make landfall on October 24-25 along the coasts of West Bengal and Odisha, the Indian Coast Guard is on "high alert" and has mobilised its vessels and aircraft, positioning them strategically to respond swiftly to any emergency situation at sea.

The ICG has been closely monitoring the situation and has taken proactive steps to ensure preparedness for dealing with any emergency arising from the cyclone’s impact, the defence ministry said in a statement.

The ICG is on "high alert" with its dedicated disaster relief teams and assets ready to provide assistance, rescue and relief operations, it said.

The storm is likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm over northwest Bay of Bengal and make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra port in Odisha early Friday with wind speeds of up to 120 kmph, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Cyclone Dana Tracker Live Updates: Odisha braces for impact, more than 3 lakh evacuated

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who reviewed the state government's preparedness, however, said that only 30 per cent of the people, or around 3-4 lakh people living in the identified 'danger zone', have been evacuated by Wednesday evening.

"The remaining people will be brought to safety by 11 am on Thursday," he said.
