The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for calling Lord Ram a "mythological" figure during a recent event at Brown University in the United States.
BJP's Amit Malviya said that Bhagwan Ram is not a mythological figure and Rahul Gandhi should stop ridiculing the beliefs of billions of Hindus around the world.
"Bhagwan Ram is not a mythological figure—He embodies the values, culture, and spiritual essence of Bharat. He represents maryada, sacrifice, and righteous leadership, which have shaped our civilisation for thousands of years. He is the soul of Bharat and central to who we are as people," he posted on X.
"Rahul Gandhi and the Congress should stop ridiculing the beliefs of billions of Hindus around the world. People like him and political parties will come and go, but Bhagwan Ram will forever remain a timeless symbol of dharma and an inspiration for generations to come," he added.

"Rashtra Drohi Congress, now Ram Drohi Congress. Rahul Gandhi says Prabhu Ram is mythological or kalpanik (imaginary). This is the reason they opposed the Ram Mandir and questioned the existence of Prabhu Ram," Poonawalla wrote on X.

Gandhi made the remarks in response to a question on secularism and Hindu nationalism. He said that India’s revered social reformers—such as Buddha, Guru Nanak, Mahatma Gandhi, and Dr. Ambedkar—were not bigots and represented a pluralistic and compassionate vision of the country. Referring to Indian deities including Lord Ram as "mythological figures," Gandhi said they too embodied values like forgiveness and tolerance.
He further stated, "I don’t consider the BJP’s vision to represent Hinduism. The true Hindu idea is inclusive, affectionate, tolerant, and open-minded. Hatred and anger, in my view, stem from fear—if you're not afraid, you don’t hate anyone."
