AAP MLA Harmeet Singh Dhillon Pathanmajra in Punjab, arrested on rape charges, allegedly fled from custody after he and his accomplices fired at the cops and even ran over a police personnel.

Harmeet Pathanmajra, AAP MLA from Sanour, was arrested in Karnal on Tuesday morning. As he was being taken to the local police station, the MLA and his aides opened fire at the police team. When a cop tried to stop them, they ran him over and fled in two SUVs, according to a report by NDTV.

"He and his accomplices had fired at the police while fleeing and they had even run over one police personnel. Police are chasing him," Punjab Police sources told ANI.

On arrest of AAP MLA Dhillon, his lawyer, advocate Simranjeet Singh Saggu said, "An FIR has been registered against Harmeet Singh...A matter was pending before the High Court. The HC disposed it off and marked DIG Ropar Range for inquiry. But this FIR is the outcome of the change in political scenario in past two days due to floods."

"This is against the law, against facts and a totally a tug of war between the political people and the bureaucracy. Section for rape and section 420 have been invoked. The complainant had filed the application before SSP Mohali and filed a writ before the High Court," his advocate added, ANI reported.

Pathanmajra faces charges of rape, cheating, and criminal intimidation. The FIR was registered after a woman complained that the MLA lied to her that he was divorced and started a relationship with her. She has accused him of sexual exploitation, threats, and sending obscene material, NDTV reported.

After the FIR, Pathanmajra went live on Facebook, strongly criticising the Punjab government and alleging that Delhi-based AAP leadership was "illegitimately ruling over Punjab."
