Fatigue, tension in your shoulders, restless nights, inability to focus are all signs of everyday stress that affects your mental and physical well-being. But did you know that chronic stress affects more than your emotions? It also impacts your oral health, leaving a lasting mark on your smile, both literally and figuratively.

Practices like a poor diet, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and inconsistent oral care routines contribute negatively to your oral health. Now, add stress too to this list. It can disturb the delicate balance necessary for a healthy mouth. From grinding teeth to neglecting oral care routines, stress can manifest in various ways, taking a toll on your teeth and gums.

Multiple studies suggest that there is a clear link between psychological stress and periodontal disease. According to a study from the Department of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Sciences at Sapienza University of Rome, there is an  intricate connection between mental well-being and dental hygiene.

Stress-related poor oral hygiene is a major culprit that encourages plaque accumulation and sets the stage for gingivitis and periodontitis over time. Moreover, chronic stress can lead to teeth grinding, jaw clenching, and a weakened immune system, making the mouth more susceptible to infections.

Impact of stress on oral health: Stress, a common companion in our lives, triggers various changes in our bodies. Be it short-term (acute) or long-lasting (chronic), stress not only leads to unhealthy coping behaviours but also directly affects important aspects of oral health, including saliva, gum blood flow, and immune responses. Chronic stress significantly impacts oral health, with bruxism being a common issue characterised by teeth grinding and jaw clenching.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), this can lead to enamel wear, tooth sensitivity, and potential damage to dental restorations. Stress also contributes to poor oral hygiene and increases the risk of plaque build-up, gingivitis, and periodontitis. Prolonged stress may weaken the immune response, exacerbate pre-existing oral conditions and heighten vulnerability to infections. Furthermore, habits associated with stress, such as nail-biting or chewing on objects, can cause harm to teeth and soft tissues.

How to cope with stress for better oral health: In order to deal with everyday stress, include mindfulness in practices like deep breathing, regular physical activity and maintain a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients. Also, prioritise quality sleep, and seek professional support through counselling or therapy. These practices not only promote your well-being but also positively impact oral health by minimising the risk of issues like teeth grinding and jaw clenching, and reduce the likelihood of stress-related oral problems such as bruxism.
