Watermelon comes to the rescue when people are looking for a way to beat the heat during scorching Indian summer. It is not only a delicious fruit but also a great option for hot seasons with its numerous health and beauty benefits. Sweet summer delight
Watermelon is known for its high water content, making it an excellent fruit for hydration during the summer. From a health and beauty perspective, watermelon has numerous benefits. Its high-water content helps in flushing out toxins from the body and keeps the skin hydrated, reducing the risk of acne, wrinkles, and fine lines. “Additionally, it is a rich source of vitamins A and C, which help in boosting immunity, and lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant that can help protect against heart disease and cancer,” mentions Dr G Sushma, Consultant Clinical Dietician at Care Hospitals, Hyderabad.
Watermelon contains amino acids that help in improving blood circulation, leading to healthy hair growth, and reducing hair fall. When it comes to consumption, you can enjoy it in multiple ways. Dr G Sushma suggests, “One easy way is to slice it into small cubes and mix it with some fresh mint leaves and lemon juice to make a refreshing summer salad. Alternatively, you can blend watermelon with mint and ice to make a delicious smoothie that can be consumed as a mid-day snack. For those who want to incorporate watermelon into their daily routine, they can try adding a few slices of watermelon to their morning cereal or yogurt bowl or mix it with some other fruits to make a fruit salad.”
Paint it red with watermelons
Watermelon is known to have high lycopene levels. They are natural phytonutrients and the red pigments that give watermelons, tomatoes, red grapefruits, and guavas their natural colour. In some studies, lycopene has been linked with heart health, bone health, and prostate cancer prevention. A ripe watermelon is also a great source of antioxidants, including vitamin C, carotenoids, lycopene, and cucurbitacin E, which are known to combat free radicals.
It is an excellent fruit to include in one's daily diet as well. According to Manisha Bhasin, Corporate Executive Chef at ITC Hotels, watermelon is a perfect addition to seasonal summer menus. Speaking about it, she says, “We recently included two standout watermelon dishes in our Dehlnavi food menu, which is inspired by Delhi’s flavourful traditional recipes. Recreate the popular summer drink ‘mohabbat ka sharbat’ by blending fresh watermelon cubes, rose syrup, milk, sugar, ice cubes, and rose petals. And, one can scoop out the watermelon fruit and stuff it with various healthy fillings to make the famous Kulle ki Chaat.”
Adding more DIY ways to include watermelon for healthy daily consumption, Chef Bhasin shares some interesting ideas. She mentions, “One can use watermelon to make cold soups and gazpacho for a refreshing summer meal. Use it with combinations of mint, fresh coriander, and a dash of lemon to make a hydrating summer drink. Also, the rind of the fruit is very rich in fiber and vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium – use it to make chutneys instead of throwing them away. The seeds too are excellent sources of micronutrients like zinc, magnesium, potassium, etc, and are known to boost immunity and heart health. One can eat them raw, sprouted, and roasted or simply use them to garnish various salads and soups.”
