Virat Kohli broke the record for the most number of centuries made by any batter in ODI history, getting to his 50th ton against New Zealand in the 2023 ODI World Cup semifinal in Mumbai on Wednesday.
The former India captain got to the mark with a double off Lockie Ferguson in the 42nd over of India's innings on Wednesday, off the 106th ball that he faced in his innings.
Kohli had equalled Tendulkar's record when he got to his 49th ODI hundred against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on his 35th birthday. The batter had made his first ODI hundred at the same ground against Sri Lanka in 2009.
Kohli's highest score in ODIs came against Pakistan in an Asia Cup encounter in 2012 when he made 183 runs to help India chase down a score of 330 runs. As if to indicate the passing of the baton, that proved to be Tendulkar's final ODI appearance for India.
The century on Wednesday was also Kohli's 80th international hundred, which is second only to Tendulkar who finished his career with 100 international hundreds.
Incidentally, November 15 marked 10 years since Tendulkar batted for the last time for India in international cricket, when he made 74 against West Indies in his 200th Test match also at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Kohli made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka at Dambulla in 2008 and was part of the Indian team that won the 2011 ODI World Cup. He was also part of the Indian squad that won the 2013 Champions Trophy in England.
Kohli eventually for 117 runs off 113 balls, caught by Devon Conway off Southee's bowling.
