And that's a wrap! A magnificent win for New Zealand Women as they register their first victory. The action continues in ICC Women's World Cup 2025 as we have a game lined up on Saturday, 11th of October at 9.30 am GMT between England Women and Sri Lanka Women. Be sure to join us for all the early build-up and toss action. Until the players take the field again, goodbye from all of us, and cheers!
Sophie Devine, the skipper of New Zealand Women, says it's pleasing for the side to get on the board in tough circumstances. Tells they had to do the ugly stuff on this sluggish pitch. Admits it was a challenge to play under tough conditions but she was helped with a lot of sugar. Mentions Lea Tahuhu and Rosemary Mair attacked the stumps and made most of the swing up front, it was fantastic to see and important from the team's point of view. Feels it was important to get some momentum, every point is absolute gold and will take one game at a time.
Nigar Sultana Joty, the skipper of Bangladesh Women, says that they are not consistent as a batting unit and that is what they need to work on. Adds that they were good at the start but couldn't carry on with the momentum. She adds that they needed to bowl in the right areas and they tried their best. She says that they need to take the learnings from this game and ends by saying that their bowlers did well and they need to improve on their batting.
Brooke Halliday is the Player of the Match for her magnificent knock of 69 runs! She says they were happy to work in singles and get a bit bored in the middle, Devine did well to play well and capitalize in the later stages. Shares they figured out how to play the spinners today. Mentions that she practised the sweep shot a lot, she did got out a couple of times but will get better with time. Reckons it is easy to bat with Devine but it was not easy to bat in those conditions. Appreciates the bowlers' performance, feels they kept it simple and that was needed on the pitch.
Presentations coming up...
Earlier in the game, New Zealand Women set a commendable total of 227/9, considering the sluggish surface and early struggles! After losing both openers cheaply, the innings was rebuilt masterfully by Brooke Halliday and skipper Sophie Devine. Their superb 112-run fourth-wicket partnership provided the backbone, ensuring New Zealand weathered the middle overs. Crucial late blows from the lower order nudged them past the 225-mark, giving the bowlers a solid target to defend. For Bangladesh Women, Rabeya Khan was the standout with the ball, registering brilliant figures of 3/30.
Later, a valiant resistance from Fahima Khatun and Rabeya Khan only stretched the game out to the 40th over. Bangladesh Women ultimately succumbed to a massive defeat by a margin of 100 runs. This was a comprehensive loss where they were outplayed in all departments. They will now look to leave this behind and bounce back strongly in their following fixtures.
Bangladesh Women were poor with the bat. Only three of their batters, Fahima Khatun, Nahida Akter, and Rabeya Khan, managed to cross the double digit mark. They were reeling at a disastrous 33 runs for the loss of 6 wickets inside the first 14 overs. At that point, the contest was effectively done and dusted, with New Zealand Women already having an upper hand.
New Zealand Women have secured a much-needed and convincing victory, finally opening their account in the ICC Women's ODI World Cup after suffering two defeats. The foundation for this dominant performance was laid by the new-ball pairing of Jess Kerr and Rosemary Mair, who dismantled the Bangladesh Women's top order. The momentum was maintained by the experienced Lea Tahuhu and Amelia Kerr, who efficiently carved through the middle order, ensuring the Bangladesh batters never had a chance to build any partnerships.
