With the Bharat NCAP crash tests finally up and running, official testing began on December 15. The authority has now released their first set of results testing the new facelifted Tata Safari and Tata Harrier awarding both SUVs five stars. Just about a month ago, the cars were also tested under the Global New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) standards and won five stars for both adult occupant safety as well as for child occupant protection.
Scoring between both the Global NCAP and the Bharat NCAP are largely similar. While on the Global NCAP crash tests, the Safari and Harrier scored 33.05 points out of a maximum of 34 in adult occupant safety, on the B-NCAP, the SUVs scored 30.08 out of a maximum of 32 points. According to the report, the crash test dummies displayed good protection for the head, knees and feet of both passenger and driver.
While the passenger dummy also displayed good protection for the tibia and chest, the driver’s chest displayed adequate protection for the right tibia and marginal protection for the chest. In the side movable deformable barrier test as well as the side pole impact test, the dummies displayed good protection overall.
The difference between the GNCAP and BNCAP frontal crash test and side test is fairly minor. However, the GNCAP side pole impact test displayed adequate protection for the abdomen and only marginal protection to the chest.
On the child occupant protection front, the Safari and Harrier scored a total of 44.54 points out of a maximum of 49 which again, amounts to a 5-star rating just like the GNCAP score.
The Tata Harrier and Tata Safari, are both powered by the same 2.0-litre Kryotec engine. This four-cylinder powertrain is capable of producing a maximum of 170 hp of power and 350 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual shifter and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. As far as the safety features go, both cars get six airbags as standard across the range with a seventh knee airbag on the higher trim levels. Other safety features include emergency call/breakdown button, 360-degree camera, ABS, ESC, ISOFIX child seat anchors, etc. The higher trims of both SUVs also get Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) technology allowing for added safety such as autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, traffic sign recognition, blind spot detection and lane departure warning, among others.
Now, this has only been the first test conducted by Bharat NCAP. The crash test authority will be testing more Indian cars in the coming days and months and we can expect to see their results being published on the official website in the near future.
