Railways registers highest revenue of Rs 2.56 lakh crore in FY24

The Indian Railways registered highest revenue of Rs 2.56 lakh crore for the financial year 2023-24, said rail minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, as against Rs 2.40 lakh crore clocked a year back.

In a post on X, Vaishnaw said the railways recorded freight loading of 1,591 million tonnes (MTs) in FY24. This compares to 1,512 MT of freight loading in FY23.

The railways laid 5,300 km of tracks in FY24, while installed 551 digital stations during the year.

According to the interim budget, the Indian Railways is set to receive a capex push of Rs 2.52 lakh crore for the financial year 2024-25, an increase of 5 percent from Rs 2.4 lakh crore allocated a year ago.

The railway ministry's internal and extra-budgetary resources (IEBR) have fallen to Rs 13,000 crore in 2024-25 from Rs 52,783 crore in 2023-24. IEBR includes funds raised through various financing sources, including that through IRFC for capex deployment.

The funds will be spent on building railway tracks, wagons, trains, electrification, signalling, and developing facilities at stations while focusing on safety.
