Diwali holidays for the stock exchanges in India.

The domestic equity markets will have a truncated trading week as the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE will remain shut for two days on account of Diwali-related holidays.

Both exchanges were open for normal trading on Monday, October 20, even as several states observed Diwali Lakshmi Puja. The commodities market also functioned as usual for both morning and evening sessions.

According to the holiday calendar issued by the exchanges, trading will remain closed on Tuesday, October 21, for Diwali Laxmi Pujan, except for a special one-hour Muhurat Trading session — a customary event marking the beginning of the new Samvat year.

Markets will also remain closed on Wednesday, October 22, on the occasion of Balipratipada.

Diwali Muhurat Trading session

The Muhurat Trading session will be conducted on October 21 as follows: Block Deal session from 1:15 pm to 1:30 pm, Pre-Open session from 1:30 pm to 1:45 pm, Normal Market session from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm, and the Closing session from 2:55 pm to 3:05 pm. Trading will be allowed across all segments, including equities, derivatives, currency, and commodities.

Market participants view the Muhurat Trading session as an auspicious start to the new trading year, often marked by symbolic purchases by investors and traders.
