Equity benchmarks inched higher on December 4, snapping a four-session losing streak, led by information technology stocks as the rupee weakened ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's rate decision.
The Nifty rose 0.18% to 26,033.75, and the Sensex added 0.19% to 85,265.32.
Both Nifty and Sense lost 0.9% and 0.7%, respectively over the past four sessions after hitting record highs last week.
Bank Nifty fell 0.1%, dragged by a 0.3% drop in private lenders HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank. Small-caps fell 0.2% and mid-caps closed flat.
Apart from South Korea's KOSPI and Singapore's FTSE Singapore Strait Times index, most equity indices in Asia ended higher Thursday. Japan's Nikkei 225 rose on the back of gains in the country's industrial-robot makers and chip companies. KOSPI fell as chip, battery, and retail stocks retreated during the session.

Sensex, Nifty close marginally higher
Sensex, Nifty closed marginally higher on December 4 amid volatility. Sensex closed 158.51 points or 0.19 percent higher at 85,265.32, and the Nifty ended 47.75 points or 0.18 percent higher at 26,033.75. About 1,716 shares advanced, 2,237 shares declined, and 166 shares were unchanged.
Market recovers from lower levels
In late-afternoon trade, Sensex was trading 200 points higher and Nifty crossed 26,050 level.

Rupee recovered to 89.92 against US Dollar on December 4 after falling as low as 90.42 earlier in the day.

Sensex falls 450 points from day's high amid volatility, Nifty gives up 26,000. At 1:50 pm, the Sensex was down 44.60 points or 0.05 percent at 85,062.21, and the Nifty was down 7.30 points or 0.03 percent at 25,978.70. About 1,601 shares advanced, 2,094 shares declined, and 151 shares unchanged.
TCS stock at 3-month high on reports IT firm may partner with OpenAI
Shares of Tata Consultancy Services rose over 2% to a three-month high of Rs 3,250 apiece on December 4 on media reports the company is in advanced talks with OpenAI to build artificial intelligence compute infrastructure in India and co-develop agentic AI solutions for enterprises. OpenAI is negotiating an agreement with TCS to lease at least 500 megawatts of data centre capacity from the Indian company's new data centre arm HyperVault to train and run its AI models locally, according to a report by The Economics Times. This will be the second major partnership between an Indian company and global AI players after the Google-Reliance collaboration earlier this year.
Biocon drops on plan to increase stake in biosimilars unit
Shares of Biocon fell 5.3% to Rs 388 apiece, hitting their lowest in three weeks, as pharma company to consider investment in Biocon Biologics via purchase of shares from existing shareholders for cash or through issuance of shares of company.
Systematix Institutional Equities analyst Vishal Manchanda said that to buyout minority interest in Biocon Biologics, Biocon may have to raise Rs 10,000 crore-Rs 15,000 crore, which would mean meaningful dilution for shareholders of the company.
Defence shares gain ahead of Putin's visit
Shares of most defence companies rose on rising expectations of a defence pact between India and Russia as Russian President Vladimir Putin visits India to attend the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. Some of the major domestic defence players are expected to benefit from any such defence pact between the countries. At 1:05 pm, the Nifty India Defence was up 0.5% at 7,853 points, with 12 of its 18 constituents trading with gains.
Unimech Aerospace and Manufacturing and Bharat Dynamics led the gains among sectoral players, up 2-4.5%, while Astra Microwave Products and Dynamatic Technologies were the worst hit.
Hexaware Tech opens new centre in Cairo
Hexaware Technologies Ltd on December 4 said it has opened a new delivery centre in Cairo, Egypt, with a staff of 100 professionals. With the new centre, Hexaware Technologies will serve customers in Egypt, West Asia and key European markets, the company said in an exchange filing.
The delivery centre will support Hexaware Technologies' artificial intelligence-led, human-intelligence-perfected delivery model, combining automation, analytics, and generative artificial intelligence with skilled teams, it stated in the filing, adding that the company is also engaging with local universities to build a steady pipeline of talent for future growth.
