The midcap index touched a record high in Wednesday’s trade, supported by broad-based buying across sectors and firm global cues.

The Nifty Midcap100 index hit an all-time peak of 61,011, extending its winning streak to the fourth consecutive session. The index has gained about 2.3 percent over the past four trading days.

Among the major gainers in the midcap segment were Biocon, Max Financial Services, BSE, and IndusInd Bank, which rose up to 5 percent.

The smallcap segment also witnessed renewed buying interest, with the Nifty Smallcap100 index snapping yesterday's decline to rise nearly 1 percent during the session.

Stocks such as The Great Eastern Shipping Company, Poonawalla Fincorp, Tejas Networks, and BLS International Services advanced up to 9 percent.

Analysts attributed the market uptrend to positive global cues, optimism over a possible India-US trade agreement and easing concerns regarding a potential end to US government shutdown. Investor sentiment was also buoyed by exit poll trends in Bihar indicating a likely victory for the ruling alliance.

The equity benchmark indices settled higher for the third straight day on Wednesday, supported by gains in IT shares amid a rally in global equities markets.

Optimism over the resolution of the US government shutdown and growing expectations of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve also bolstered the sentiment.

The Sensex rallied 595.19 points or 0.71 per cent to settle at 84,466.51. It gained up to 780.69 points or 0.93 percent to hit an intraday high of 84,652.01. The broader Nifty climbed 180.85 points or 0.7 percent to close at 25,875.80. During the session, it jumped 239.6 points or 0.93 percent to hit a high of 25,934.55.
