Indian equity indices failed to hold record highs and snapped the three-day run to end flat in the volatile session on September 24 after Sensex and Nifty crossed 85,000 and 26,000, intraday, respectively.
At close, the Sensex was down 14.57 points or 0.02 percent at 84,914.04, and the Nifty was up 1.40 points or 0.01 percent at 25,940.40.

Asian shares gained for a fifth day as a rally sparked by support measures from Beijing continued, while US stocks set fresh highs, with investors preparing for further rate cuts.

The S&P 500 and Dow ended at record highs on Tuesday, shrugging off weak consumer confidence data, as mining stocks surged following China's announcement of a sweeping stimulus package.
The indexes initially trimmed gains after a report from the Conference Board revealed an unexpected decline in U.S. consumer confidence in September, driven by growing concerns about the labor market's health.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 83.57 points, or 0.20%, to 42,208.22, the S&P 500 gained 14.36 points, or 0.25%, to 5,732.93 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 100.25 points, or 0.56%, to 18,074.52.

The US 10-year Treasury yield added 25 bps at 3.73 percent and the US 2-year bond yield was down 72 bps to 3.51 percent, in the early trade on Wednesday.

Against a basket of currencies, the dollar last stood at 100.26, languishing near a more than one-year low of 100.21.
The dollar index had fallen more than 0.5% in the previous session, its largest one-day percentage fall in a month.

All theAsian currencies were trading higher against the US dollar, with the Malaysian Ringgit leading as the top gainer, up 1 percent. Over the past one-month, Thai Baht added more than 4 percent, while China Renminbi, Singapore Dollar, Malaysian Ringgit added more than 1 percent each.

Oil prices steadied on Wednesday after rising in the previous session on fading excitement for the economic stimulus in China, the world's biggest crude importer, though an industry report showing falling U.S. crude and fuel inventories supported the market.

The foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 2784 crore on September 24, while domestic institutional investors extended their buying as they bought equities worth Rs 3868 crore on the same day.
