Asian markets opened on a cautious note as investors looked to Donald Trump’s talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy for direction before adding exposure

Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty are likely to see a strong opening on August 18, tracking GIFT Nifty, which was hovering around 24,887 earlier this morning.

Benchmark indices ended marginally higher, extending gains for a second session in a volatile trade on August 14, reflecting caution ahead of the Trump-Putin summit, slated to take place tomorrow.

At close, the Sensex was up 57.75 points or 0.07 percent at 80,597.66, and the Nifty was up 11.95 points or 0.05 percent at 24,631.30. The BSE midcap index was down 0.2 percent, while smallcap index shed 0.6 percent.

GIFT Nifty (Gains)

The GIFT Nifty is trading higher at around 24,887, indicating a strong start for the day.

Asian Equities (Mixed)

Asian markets opened on a cautious note as investors looked to Donald Trump’s talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy for direction before adding exposure.

US Equities (Mixed)

The blue-chip Dow Jones ended higher after hitting an intraday record high on Friday, as UnitedHealth's shares jumped after Berkshire Hathaway raised its stake, but other Wall Street indexes slipped as mixed data clouded the Federal Reserve's next monetary policy move.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 34.86 points, or 0.08%, to 44,946.12, the S&P 500 lost 18.74 points, or 0.29%, to 6,449.80 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 87.69 points, or 0.40%, to 21,622.98.

US Bond Yield (Down)

The yield on 10-year Treasuries and 2-year Treasuries were down marginally in the early trade on Monday.

Dollar Index (Flat)

The dollar dithered on Monday ahead of a key meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy, while investors also looked ahead to the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium for more policy clues.

Asian currencies (Down)

Asian currencies were trading mostly lower against the US dollar in the early trade on Monday with Indonesian Rupiah leading the losers followed by Japanese Yen, Thai Baht, China Renminbi and Malaysian Ringgit.

Crude (Down)

Oil prices slipped on Monday as the U.S. did not exert more pressure on Russia to end the Ukraine war by implementing further measures to disrupt Russian oil exports after the presidents from both countries met on Friday.

Gold (Up)

Gold held a weekly decline on signs President Donald Trump’s tariff agenda is starting to create
inflationary pressures in the US, and could threaten rate cuts.

Fund Flow Action

The Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) extended their selling on fourth consecutive session on August 14 as they offloaded equities worth Rs 1,926 crore, while Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased equities worth Rs 3,895 crore on the same day.
