Jaguar Land Rover has said that it has been testing the upcoming electric Range Rover in extreme conditions in the arctic circle and Middle Eastern deserts, and plans to launch the electric version later this year.
The company last month released images of Range Rover being test-driven across frozen lakes in the arctic, under sub-zero temperature. The wait list for the electric Range Rover had opened in December last year, and JLR claims it already has over 28,700 sign-ups for the model.
JLR Results
The luxury car maker said it clocked record Range Rover wholesale and retail sales for the fourth quarter as well as the fiscal. The JLR order book was around 1.33 lakh vehicles at the end of the fiscal, 76% of which was for Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Defender models. Reacting to the Q4FY24 results, JLR CEO Adrian Mardell said, "the foundation of this success was the sustained global demand for our modern luxury vehicles and a consistent focus on operational improvement."
Battery Storage PlansTata Motors-owned JLR recently announced a partnership with energy storage start-up Allye Energy to create a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that provides 'zero emissions' power on the go. The engineering team at JLR have been testing this for Range Rover Electric, the company said. By the end of the decade, JLR has decided to rollout pure electric models for Range Rover, Discovery and the Defender collection. A new Defender OCTA is scheduled to be revealed on July 3, the company mentioned in the press release.
The Tata Group has also started work on a new $4.3 billion battery plant in Somerset, UK, and is expected to start production from 2026. The group sells JLR's three brands - Range Rover Evoque, Discovery Sport and Jaguar F-Pace - in India.
Tatas dominates India's small but growing EV market where EVs made up about 2% of total car sales in 2023. The Centre wants to scale this up to 30% by 2030.
