JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump will be staring at the most complicated global economic and geopolitical landscape the world has faced since World War II, and it could be a tough phase with a lot of unknowns.
Speaking at the APEC CEO Summit in Peru on November 15, Dimon said, "Whoever is elected will be responsible for the most complicated, geo-political, military and geo-economic situation that the world has faced since WWII. This could be a difficult this with a lot of unknowns and uncertainties."
Responding to a question on how he'd react to Trump's inability to have Dimon in the administration, the renowned banker joked, "I haven't had a boss for 25 years, and I'm not about ready to start."
Jamie Dimon said America needs a growth strategy, and "collaboration between government and business is the way to have growth". He highlighted that the regulatory environment has become "stifling", and hoped the new administration will bring in efficiency. "I think it is a reasonable thing to have the kind of reform that will go deeper than regulations. Its got to be permitting and all the related things that come with that," Dimon said. He expressed hope that the Trump 2.0 administration will be able to achieve these reforms as they have the Senate, the House, and the Presidency, which means, "they have far more ability to do things like that."
"I'll applaud any government that says I am going to make governance more efficient," he added. Dimon blamed inefficient governance for the need to have populism. "Inefficient government is one of the reasons why people are frustrated, and that's why you have populism."
Dimon said a lot of the bankers are "dancing in the streets" in the hope of this deregulation. "They have had successive years of regulations, a lot of which has stymied credit."
