The New York Road Runners (NYRR) has signed Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) as the title sponsor of the New York City Marathon beginning next year. For the next eight years TCS will be the title sponsor of this most popular marathon in the world. It's also the biggest marathon in the world with approximately 50,000 runners last year. In an interview with CNBC-TV18 N Chandrasekaran, MD & CEO, TCS and Mary Wittenberg, Pres & CEO, New York Road Runners spoke about this partnership.

Q: Amsterdam and now New York. What are you getting from these title sponsorships?
Chandrasekaran: From a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) point of view we are very committed to health and wellness. We have young workforce. We have 295,000 professionals of an average age of 27-28 years. All the communities in which we operate, whether it is United States or Latin America or any part of the world, we want to promote health and wellness. We think that that is fundamentally important even for students to study well and have a better career and so on. This is the theme we have taken. Internally also, we promote a lot of health activities, we have the TCS Fit for Life which now has everyone in the company registered. This year would be running at least 5 million kilometers.
Q: What do you expect it to do for your brand among the customers?
Chandrasekaran: It will definitely promote the brand. It is the best possible ways to get known. TCS is extremely well known in the client base in the enterprise world, but we are not as well known at the public at large.
Q: Why is that important?
Chandrasekaran: As we become larger and larger, it is very important for people to know what we stand for, because people come across TCS all the time. We have large number of professionals everywhere.
Q: Is it just the money that made you take towards TCS or is it something more?
Wittenberg: We were looking for a year-round partner. We have plenty of opportunity to work with a number of different companies. For us most important was a partner who wanted to help us elevate the health and well being of whole communities through running, that wanted to take advantage of our global brand and platform. For us we are really big on the potential that technology offers to help us get a lot of people moving in healthier and fitter. So, this is really an ideal marriage and what it does for TCS in addition is a company who is selling services to CEOs, CTOs and CIOs around the world. It is not only it is important for citizens to know the core value of a global company like TCS, in addition our platform is global in nature. There is a lot of technology that goes into running a major marathon and in getting people healthier and fitter all year round and what a difference it will make for TCS when people see that we become the most technologically advanced marathon in the world and that we have a lot more people running. Partnership with TCS will help us do that and that makes for a great case study for TCS.
