Neyveli Lignite recently commissioned Unit- I of Thermal Power Station (TPS) -II Expansion Project (2x250 MW). In an interview to CNBC-TV18 chairman B Surender Mohan says the second unit will be commissioned in the next three weeks.

Furthermore, he expects the company’s installed capacity to increase to 4,240 MW by May and aims to expand the same to over 12,000 MW by the end of the 13th plan.

Below is the verbatim transcript of B Surender Mohan's interview with Latha Venkatesh and Sonia Shenoy on CNBC-TV18.

Sonia: Can you tell us about this power plant, how many phases have been commissioned already and when is the project expected to get completed?

A: Extension of TPS-II, it is 2x250 megawatt, nation’s first Circulating Fluidised Bed Combustion (CFBC) power plant coming first time in India. So it has been commissioned - one unit has been commissioned on April 21 and we are going to commission the other unit, that is other 250 megawatt. That will be commissioned within three weeks from now onwards. There are some small minor modifications are there so it will be commissioned. With the commissioning of these two plants, about 250 megawatts each, our capacity has gone from 2,740 megawatts to 2,900 megawatt. Again they are going to commission one more 250 megawatt and next month they are planning to commission 1,000 megawatt. That will come to 4,240 megawatt. So our Neyveli power station capacity will jump from 2,740 to 4,240 megawatt by end of May.

Latha: What is the capacity at which you will be able to operate all of them on an average for FY16?

A: New plants operate about 65-70 percent plant load factor (PLF) but otherwise after one year, we will go up to 80 percent of average. Our average plant operation is 80 percent. New plants are at initial stages, so they will take some time to stabilise.

Latha: All of it is on in-house mined coal?

A: Yes, everything is supplied in-house. In Neyveli TPS-II expansion is pit head plant whereas Tuticorin where it is a coal-based power plant we get it from the coal from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), we have got Fuel Supply Agreement (FSA) with MCL and also from the imported coal. There also now our capacity is 250 megawatt now but it is supposed to come at 500 megawatt so there we are doing some minor modification.
