The affordable housing segment is expected to be the next big growth driver and it might find a lot of mention in the Budget as well. Predictions are that there could be a phenomenal 30 percent growth in the medium-term in the affordable housing segment. What can the Budget do about this? What has been done since the Prime Minister announced the thrust for affordable housing on December 31, 2016?

In an interview to CNBC-TV18, Sudhin Choksey, MD of Gruh Finance shared his expectations on the affordable housing segment in the upcoming Budget and gave his outlook for the future.

Choksey said that there are four verticals in the affordable housing segment as per government's policy.

He further said that credit-linked subsidy is the most discussed vertical.

Nothing is happening in lower income group (LIG) side of the affordable housing segment, he mentioned.

"FY19 would be much better than FY18 because the rate at which the new projects have been launched and Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) also has more or less settled down, whatever reforms had to happen, which affected the real estate sector much more adversely during last year, all those are behind us. So I expect the second half of FY19 that is October '18 onwards, things should look much more positive," he added.
