Business News Live: Stocks higher after inflation data keeps Fed expectations on hold

Global stocks were higher and poised for a weekly gain while longer-dated U.S. Treasury yields rose after a reading on inflation and consumer confidence kept expectations for the path of Federal Reserve interest rate cuts intact.

The U.S. producer price index for final demand was unchanged in September, slightly below the forecast of economists polled by Reuters for a gain of 0.1% and follows an unrevised 0.2% increase in August, indicating inflation continues to cool and giving the Fed leeway to continue cutting interest rates.

In the 12 months through September, the PPI increased 1.8% versus the 1.6% estimate.

Business News Live: India's high food inflation leaves less in lunch boxes of poor school children

Nearly two years of elevated food inflation in India is leaving less in the lunch boxes of impoverished children, as government funded school meals suffer cutbacks because of rising prices of vegetables, fruits and pulses.

The three-decades old programme, intended to draw poor children into school and provide them with basic nutrition, throws into sharp relief the inflationary impact of food on the nation's most needy and the widening inequality in the world's fastest growing major economy.

Reuters interviews with 21 school teachers across four states, a dozen families and researchers show schools have been forced to scrimp on key ingredients as the meal budget under the scheme has not increased for the last two years despite soaring food prices.

The programme covers an estimated 120 million children across a million government and government-aided schools up to class 8, data available on the scheme's website showed. Teachers and school administrators manage the quality of food provided.

"Budget for the mid-day meal scheme is not indexed to inflation regularly as it should be, compromising the quality of the meal," said Dipa Sinha, an independent development economist and researcher who works with the 'Right For Food' campaign, an informal non-government network of organisations and individuals.

"While the government provides free grain for these meals, that does not compensate for a cut-back in other nutritious ingredients like vegetables, pulses, milk and eggs due to inadequate budgets," said Sinha.

Business News Live: Tesla's robotaxi event was long on Musk promises. Investors wanted more details

For a businessman who perpetually struggles with broken promises, Elon Musk gave himself quite a to-do list Thursday night at Tesla's long-awaited Hollywood unveiling of its driverless robotaxis.

After traversing the fake streets of the Warner Bros movie studio set in a sleek, silver two-door "Cybercab" prototype, Musk promised that the company's popular Model 3 and Model Y vehicles would be able to operate without driver supervision in California and Texas by next year.

Musk said the company would start building the fully autonomous Cybercab by 2026 at a price of less than $30,000, and showed off a robovan capable of transporting 20 people around town - which he said would reshape cities by "turning parking lots into parks."

Later came the dancing humanoid robots that also mixed drinks at the bar, which Musk said Tesla will also eventually sell for $20,000 to $30,000 a piece. "I think this will be the biggest product ever, of any kind," he declared.

Thursday night's electronic dance music-infused event had the signature trappings of Musk's salesmanship, but some Tesla investors and experts said they were hoping for more concrete details on how the company plans to transform from an automaker into an autonomous driving and artificial intelligence titan with a solid business plan.

Net income fell to $12.9 billion from $13.2 billion in the year-ago quarter. JPMorgan set aside $3.1 billion to cover credit losses, up from $1.4 billion in the same period a year ago.

Total revenues rose to $43.3 billion from $40.7 billion a year ago.

Business news live: Profitability of small finance banks expected to decline in FY25: Crisil

The profitability of small finance banks, measured in terms of return of assets (RoA), will moderate around 40 basis points to about 1.7 per cent this fiscal from 2.1 per cent in last financial year due to lower net interest margins (NIM) and higher credit costs, said a report. That said, RoA for small finance banks (SFBs) will still be higher than that for the overall banking system by 50-60 bps on account of the relatively higher yielding nature of their loan book, Crisil said in the report.
