Are you one of those enthusiastic make-up fans who cannot start your daily exercise routine without applying a generous layer of your favourite foundation? Before you reach for it again on your way to the gym, consider a recent study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. The study reveals that wearing foundation during exercise can have an impact on your skin, a concern echoed by dermatologists who warn that it could clog your pores and even results in acne.
The study involved 43 healthy college students (20 males and 23 females), with half of them applying foundation cream to their forehead and upper cheeks, while the other half left their skin bare. The results were revealing. After exercising, the entire face showed increased moisture, particularly in the areas where make-up was applied. Skin pore size also increased after exercise, especially on the non-make-up side, while oil production decreased where make-up was used.
So, how exactly does makeup harm your skin during a workout?
Exercise induces changes in sweat production, boosts metabolism, and indirectly affects the condition of the skin. For example, with each 0.2-degree increase in internal temperature during exercise, more blood flows to the skin as a regulatory measure. This leads to the expansion of skin pores to expel waste products and sebum, which must be cleansed before they accumulate and potentially harm the skin.
According to dermatologist Sapna Manchanda, make-up has a tendency to clog pores and cause increased skin dryness. This means that your favourite foundation might be suffocating your skin, especially when you're sweating.
But what if you still want to wear make-up during your workout? There are several considerations:
Sunscreen as a base: Most dermatologists suggest that you must begin with sunscreen as your base.
Water-based or mineral make-up: Opt for water-based products or mineral powders for your base. Avoid oil-based occlusive make-up that can clog pores.
BB Creams and CC Creams: Beauty balms (BB creams) and colour-correcting (CC) creams provide coverage without the pore-clogging downsides. These alternatives offer a lighter option for those seeking coverage while exercising.
Waterproof mascara: For intense sweat sessions, waterproof mascara is essential.
If you do decide to wear make-up, ensure your gym kit is clean and consider incorporating a "double cleanse" into your routine. Use lightweight, water-based formulas for cleansing that won't block your pores. This thorough cleansing helps remove any excess sweat, oil, and skin cells that could lead to blocked pores and breakouts.
For outdoor workouts, remember to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Use a minimum SPF of 30, wear sunglasses and a hat, and don't forget to apply sunscreen to your ears, neck, and lips. Sun protection is crucial for maintaining healthy skin, especially during outdoor exercise.
