If you love a space that feels open, breathable, and grounded, then choosing furniture that invites calm and brings natural elements into the room is key. Natural materials like wood, bamboo, and organic fabrics help create an atmosphere that feels alive and aligned with nature, adding both beauty and a sense of peace to your home.

Being eco-friendly, both in general and when choosing your furniture, is a responsibility, says Anjum Jung, Principal Architect and Founder of Morph Design Company and Executive Director of Prestige Group. “Each piece in modern architecture reflects the commitment to protecting the planet. By selecting sustainable furniture, you’re supporting the planet and creating a space that’s both warm to stay in and kind to the earth,” he adds.

Jung shares 6 ways to make your home stylish and sustainable:

  • Conquering emissions in engineered wood products: Formaldehyde, a common indoor pollutant, poses significant health risks, including irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Prolonged exposure can even lead to chronic conditions like asthma and cancer. To reduce this threat, implement stringent emission standards for engineered wood products. These standards ensure that engineered wood products release minimal formaldehyde, making them safer for both consumers and the environment.

  • Reclaimed wood: Introducing reclaimed wood from ageing structures or alternative sources reduces the need for freshly harvested timber, while lending a distinctive, weathered aesthetic to new constructions. This approach infuses contemporary designs with warmth and character and also helps minimise the environmental impact of construction activities.

  • Bamboo: Bamboo is a fast-growing, renewable resource and an excellent alternative to traditional hardwood. Its strength and flexibility make it ideal for various uses; ranging from flooring and structural beams to decorative accents—while adding a natural aesthetic to any building.

  • Balcony trends: Bamboo patio sets, known for their resilience and renewable qualities, are a popular choice, while macramé accents bring artisanal elegance. This blend of materials creates a comfortable, handcrafted atmosphere that promotes an earthy and natural aesthetic.

  • Low-VOC paint: Traditional paints release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, contributing to poor indoor air quality. Choosing low-VOC or zero-VOC paints helps create healthier living spaces while also reducing environmental impact.

  • Green roof systems: Green roofs involve planting vegetation on rooftops, helping to reduce heat absorption, improve insulation, and promote biodiversity. They also manage storm water runoff, making them an eco-friendly and practical addition to urban architecture.
  • Solar tiles: Solar tiles combine function with form by integrating solar panels directly into a building’s roof design. These tiles capture renewable energy without the bulky appearance of traditional solar panels, blending seamlessly with modern architectural styles.
