Ageing is a natural process that affects everyone differently, including fathers. According to the National Institute on Aging, common signs of ageing in men may include memory decline, changes in vision or hearing, decreased mobility, and shifts in mood or personality. While some men may age gracefully with few noticeable changes, others experience more pronounced physical or cognitive decline. It's essential to recognise that ageing is a complex and individualised journey, and each dad deals with it differently.

Here’s how you can support your ageing dad and help him maintain dignity and freedom while strengthening family bonds:

Abstain from patronising: Ageing can bring physical limitations, making tasks like driving or doing household chores, a challenge. Always offer practical assistance without being patronising. Seek professional help if necessary, such as arranging transportation or hiring a caretaker/nurse.

Forgetfulness: Ageing dads may become forgetful, misplacing items or forgetting appointments. Offer gentle reminders and encourage the use of memory aids like calendars or reminder apps.

Grumpiness: When fathers grow old, they display increased irritability or moodiness due to health issues or frustration with limitations. Practice empathy and understanding. Encourage them to participate in activities that bring joy and relaxation.

Isolation: Losing loved ones and friends is common as you age. Ageing dads may withdraw socially due to mobility issues or loss of family members or friends. Encourage social engagement through family gatherings, community events, or hobbies. Offer to accompany them to social outings to reduce isolation and promote connections.

Reluctance to change: Ageing dads may resist changes in routine or technology. Introduce changes gradually and offer assistance with new gadgets or tasks. Highlight the benefits of adaptation while respecting their freedom.

Repetition: Older dads may repeat stories or anecdotes due to memory lapses. Practice active listening and patience, even if you've heard the story before. Redirect the conversation gently if needed.

Stubbornness: Older dads may become more set in their ways, refusing help or insisting on doing things independently. Respect their independence. Nevertheless, offer support when needed. Choose your battles and prioritise patience and care.
