If you’re dealing with hair thinning or hair loss, you’ve probably tried everything from shampoos and serums to home remedies, hoping for a miracle. Hair loss can feel frustrating and overwhelming, especially when nothing seems to work as quickly or effectively as you’d like. But what if you could try tools that are scientifically backed and easy to use at home? That’s where the derma roller and laser hair comb come in.

These two devices have gained a lot of attention for their ability to promote hair growth, and they’re often seen as go-to options for people looking to boost their haircare routine. While they work in completely different ways, both are designed to stimulate the scalp and encourage hair follicles to grow thicker, healthier strands. The best part? You can use them from the comfort of your own home, and they’re not as complicated or intimidating as they might seem.

Here’s a closer look at how they work, their benefits, and how to incorporate them into your hair care routine.

  • Derma roller for hair growth

A derma roller is a handheld device equipped with tiny needles that create micro-injuries on the scalp, a process known as microneedling. This technique triggers the body’s natural wound-healing response, increasing blood circulation and collagen production around hair follicles. It also enhances the absorption of topical hair treatments like minoxidil, making them more effective.

Choose a derma roller with needles range from 0.25 to 0.5 mm specifically designed for use on the scalp, and then gently roll it over your clean and dry scalp area in three different directions; vertical, horizontal, and diagonal; for about 5-10 minutes. Follow that up with hair growth serum or hair treatment for optimal results. Use the derma roller only 1-2 times in a week so as not to irritate the scalp excessively.

A study published in the International Journal of Trichology demonstrated that the combination of microneedling with minoxidil results in significant improvement in hair regrowth in patients with androgenetic alopecia compared to minoxidil alone. However, it is important to clean the derma roller after each use and avoid using it on irritated or infected scalps.

  • Laser hair comb for hair growth

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) stimulates the hair follicles by utilising laser hair combs. It directs light energy to the scalp to stimulate hair follicles when in the growth phase (anagen). LLLT enhances blood flow to the scalp, supplying the necessary nutrients to the hair roots for hair regrowth.

To use a laser hair comb, glide it slowly over a clean, dry scalp for about 10–15 minutes per session, 3–4 times a week. The treatment is non-invasive and pain-free, making it an attractive option for those looking for an easy-to-use tool. Clinical studies, for example, one published in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, have shown that LLLT increases hair density and thickness in individuals with male and female pattern baldness. However, it's worth noting that laser combs are less effective for advanced hair loss where follicles are no longer active.

  • Derma roller vs. laser hair comb

Both tools offer unique benefits, and their effectiveness depends on your specific needs. Derma rollers are excellent for boosting the absorption of topical treatments and stimulating the scalp, while laser hair combs work well for energising dormant hair follicles through light therapy. Derma rollers require careful handling to avoid irritation and are typically used 1–2 times a week, whereas laser combs are simple, user-friendly, and can be used more frequently, about 3–4 times a week.

Should you use both?

Using both tools together can provide complementary benefits. A derma roller enhances the scalp’s ability to absorb topical treatments, while a laser comb stimulates hair follicles. Alternating between these tools on different days can help optimise results. However, it’s important to follow the product guidelines and avoid overusing either tool to prevent scalp irritation.

Both derma rollers and laser hair combs are effective options for promoting hair growth, particularly in cases of early-stage hair loss or thinning. For the best results, use these tools consistently and pair them with a nutrient-rich diet, a proper hair care routine, and advice from a dermatologist if needed. With patience and the right approach, these tools can become valuable allies in your hair growth journey.
