Zika virus spreads mainly through infected mosquitoes called Aedes. It became widely known for spreading quickly and causing serious health problems. Many people who get zika have mild symptoms like fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes. But the virus became especially concerning because it can cause birth defects like microcephaly in babies born to mothers who have zika.

To prevent zika, it's important to control mosquitoes by using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and getting rid of any standing water where mosquitoes breed. Doctors diagnose zika by looking at symptoms, travel history, and specific lab tests.

When it comes to zika virus and pregnancy, it's crucial to be aware of potential symptoms that could indicate infection. Here are ten symptoms to watch for according to Noida- based gynaecologist Manisha Kadam.

Fever: Fever is commonly present with viral infections like measles, often causing discomfort, chills, and sweating. It indicates the body's immune response to the infection, helping to fight off pathogens.

Rash: Measles rash starts as red spots on the face and spreads to the body, appearing in clusters. It's a hallmark sign, indicating the viral infection's impact on the skin and typically lasts several days.

Conjunctivitis: Measles-related conjunctivitis causes redness and inflammation of the eyes, leading to sensitivity to light and discomfort. It's a result of the virus affecting the membranes lining the eyelids.

Joint pain: Measles can cause joint pain, especially in smaller joints like hands and feet, due to inflammation triggered by the immune response against the virus. It adds to the overall discomfort during the illness.

Muscle pain: Intense muscle pain is a common symptom of measles, often accompanied by swelling and soreness. It reflects the body's inflammatory response to the virus affecting muscle tissues.

Headache: Measles headaches are severe, often accompanied by sensitivity to light and possibly lasting throughout the illness. They result from the virus's impact on the nervous system and the body's inflammatory response.

Lack of appetite: Measles can cause a lack of appetite, nausea, and sometimes vomiting, affecting overall nutrition and energy levels. It's a typical response to the body fighting the infection.

Vomiting and diarrhoea: While less common, measles can lead to gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting followed by diarrhoea, contributing to dehydration and adding to the illness's severity.

Fatigue: Persistent fatigue is a hallmark of measles, making individuals feel tired and rundown due to the body's energy being diverted towards fighting the viral infection.

Abdominal pain: Although less frequent than other symptoms, some individuals with measles may experience abdominal pain, typically associated with gastrointestinal disturbances caused by the virus.

If you experience any of these symptoms during pregnancy and are in or have travelled to an area with Zika virus transmission, it's important to seek medical advice promptly. Testing and monitoring can help ensure both your health and the health of your baby.
