Heart problems have become alarmingly common and are now one of the leading causes of death. Sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, stress, smoking, and uncontrolled health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure are contributing to this rise.
When it comes to heart problems, most people think of sharp chest pain or sudden collapse. But not all heart issues come with sirens. Many start quietly, with signs that are easy to overlook or brush off. Constant fatigue, breathlessness or leg swelling can be your body’s way of warning you.
According to Dr Bipeenchandra Bhamre, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon in Mumbai, catching these signs early can make all the difference in preventing long-term damage. “It’s a common myth that heart trouble always begins with chest pain. In reality, silent heart attacks, arrhythmias, and even early heart failure can develop gradually and cause symptoms that mirror other conditions, like stress, ageing, or poor sleep. Many patients come in late because they’ve ignored small signs. By the time they seek help, the damage has already started,” says Dr Bhamre. That’s why it’s essential to pay attention to what your body is trying to say.

Dr Bhamre suggests 5 early signs of hidden heart problems:
Notice constant tiredness: If you’re feeling exhausted even after a good night’s sleep, your heart could be struggling to supply enough oxygen-rich blood to your body. Fatigue is a common, but often dismissed, early sign of heart trouble.
Look out for breathlessness during easy tasks: Finding it hard to breathe after climbing a few stairs or walking short distances? It might not be just “getting older.” Difficulty breathing can signal heart failure or blocked arteries.
Never ignore chest discomfort: Not all chest pain is intense. You might feel tightness, pressure, or mild discomfort in your chest. “If the sensation is unusual or keeps recurring, get it checked,” advises Dr Bhamre.

Check for swelling in your ankles or legs: If your shoes feel tighter than usual or your ankles look puffy, it could mean fluid retention, an early sign that your heart isn’t pumping effectively.
Note dizziness or fainting spells: These may happen when the heart isn’t maintaining proper circulation or there are rhythm disturbances. “Even one episode is worth mentioning to your doctor,” says Dr Bhamre.
Tips to protect your heart:
You don’t need extreme measures to keep your heart healthy. “A simple routine can make a big difference. Follow a balanced diet that’s low in salt, sugar, and saturated fat. Move your body daily, even walking helps. Avoid smoking, manage stress, and stay on top of any medical conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure,” says Dr Bhamre.
Most importantly, he adds, don’t skip your check-ups. Regular screenings can help catch problems before they become serious.
