Dengue continues to be a major health concern for children in India, particularly those under 15. Once largely seasonal, it is a threat all year around, thanks to rising temperatures and urbanisation, both ideal conditions for Aedes mosquitoes to thrive. Studies show that even a one-degree Celsius increase can raise dengue risk by over 10 per cent.
Parents who remain alert, spot early symptoms, and act promptly give children the best chance of avoiding severe illness. Dr Tushar Shah, Consultant Paediatrician and Chief of Navkar Children Hospital, Vadodara, tells Moneycontrol, “The tricky part about dengue in children is that it often starts like any mild viral infection. Therefore, early recognition is vital to prevent complications.”

The first few days after infection are the most deceptive. “Around five to seven days post-mosquito bite, children may develop a sudden high fever, sometimes reaching 104°F. Other early signs include skin rashes, mild bruising, bleeding from the gums or nose, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Older children may describe headaches, eye pain, muscle and joint aches, or nausea, while younger children or infants often cannot articulate discomfort. Instead, watch for irritability, refusal to feed, excessive sleepiness, or constant crying, all subtle hints of dengue,” warns Dr Shah.
Parents, the expert says, should trust their instincts. Even if a child’s fever eases, that doesn’t always mean recovery. “Vigilance is essential,” he adds. According to the doctor, the critical phase can follow surprisingly fast.
Severe dengue arises when the virus causes blood vessels to leak, leading to fluid accumulation around the lungs and abdomen. “Warning signs include persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual tiredness, restlessness, dehydration, and bleeding.” Dr Shah shares. He adds, “If untreated, dengue can escalate to Dengue Shock Syndrome, affecting vital organs like the liver, kidneys, and heart, and can be life-threatening in up to 20 per cent of children.”
Dr Shah shares tips on how parents can respond:
If a child develops high fever for more than two or three days, see a paediatrician immediately. Blood tests such as NS1, IgM, or IgG help confirm dengue, and doctors may monitor platelet counts and haematocrit levels regularly.

During illness:
“With no specific antiviral treatment, careful monitoring and supportive care are the best protection,” Dr Shah stresses.
Tips for prevention at home and in the community:
“Preventing dengue is as important as recognising it early. Aedes mosquitoes bite during the day and breed in stagnant water.” tells Dr Shah and suggests prevention tips:
1. What are the early signs of dengue in children?
Early signs include high fever, skin rashes, mild bruising, bleeding from gums or nose, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Older children may experience headaches, eye pain, muscle and joint aches, or nausea.
2. How soon do symptoms appear after a mosquito bite?
Symptoms typically appear 5-7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
3. When should parents consult a paediatrician?
Consult a paediatrician if a child has a high fever for more than 2-3 days. Blood tests like NS1, IgM, or IgG can confirm dengue.
4. What are the warning signs of severe dengue?
Warning signs include persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual tiredness, restlessness, dehydration, and bleeding.
5. How can parents manage dengue symptoms at home?
Manage fever with paracetamol, ensure plenty of fluids and rest, and monitor symptoms closely. Seek urgent care if warning signs appear.
