Know your sleep position: Your sleeping position is the foundation for determining the ideal mattress for your body. “Side sleepers generally need a softer mattress to cushion their shoulders and hips,” explains Nichani. “On the other hand, back and stomach sleepers require firmer support to maintain spinal alignment and avoid unnecessary strain.”
Mattress firmness levels: For side sleepers, soft to medium-firm mattresses are ideal, providing adequate contouring. Meanwhile, stomach sleepers may benefit from a firmer surface to prevent sinking, which could cause strain on the lower back.
