Many people like to multiply the benefits of their favourite drink by adding healthy ingredients. The case is no different with apple cider vinegar (ACV), which enjoys a great reputation among fitness enthusiasts. It’s said that honey increases its nutritional offering, making it more enjoyable.

Health benefits of Apple cider vinegar and honey

Apple cider vinegar is known to offer many health benefits. Made by mixing crushed apples with yeast and sugar, it’s fermented twice. Over several weeks, the yeast digests the sugar to make alcohol, and once this happens, the natural bacteria convert alcohol into acetic acid.

This acetic acid is the star of the drink, responsible for its sour flavour. On the other hand, honey is popularly enjoyed for its sweet taste, made by combining fructose and glucose with hints of pollen, micronutrients, and antioxidants.

Together, the two make for a flavour-packed drink when mixed with warm water. While both ingredients are known to be healthy, the effects of their combination haven’t yet been largely studied.

Benefits of combining apple cider vinegar and honey

Aids weight loss

Many people take apple cider vinegar for weight loss. This is because it keeps you full for longer and slows down the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream. It regulates blood sugar levels and prevents large glucose spikes, making it particularly beneficial for those type 2 diabetes. It is best to keep the quantity of honey in it less, as it’s high in sugar and calories.

Boosts immunity

If you struggle with seasonal flu and common colds, the combination of apple cider vinegar and honey can help. Both have antimicrobial properties that help fight infections. Honey also contains pollen and plant compounds, which, according to studies, relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis and hay fever. ACV contains probiotics, which increase the good gut bacteria, aiding digestion and improving immunity.

Good for the heart

Apple cider vinegar and honey can help support cardiovascular health. The chlorogenic acid in vinegar can lower high blood pressure; meanwhile, honey improves blood flow, preventing clots and the oxidation of LDL cholesterol with its powerful polyphenol antioxidants. They are both anti-inflammatory, which reduces the risk of plaque buildup in arteries. However, more research is needed in the area.

Who should avoid the combination?

While it’s considered beneficial for health, it may not be fit for consumption for those with diabetes, as it can raise blood sugar levels. Exercising caution and moderate consumption are highly recommended. ACV can cause gastric reflux, so those with stomach issues should avoid it.

The acidity in vinegar can erode tooth enamel and cause tooth decay. It is thus best consumed with water. It is suggested to rinse your mouth after drinking it.

If you are on medication for diabetes or potassium-lowering drugs, it’s best to consult a doctor before starting their use.
