For generations, women have turned to rice water to enhance their skin and hair health. Traditionally consumed to aid digestion, it’s now trending on Instagram as an all-natural remedy for better skin, immunity, and gut health. This resurgence has led many to start using it without fully understanding its potential impact.
Nutritionally, rice water is rich in carbohydrates and contains small amounts of B vitamins, amino acids, and trace minerals. Fermented rice water is believed to offer probiotic benefits and is said to improve skin texture and hydration. However, like most natural remedies, its effectiveness depends on how well it is prepared, the amount used, and individual health conditions.
Dr Neha Bansal, a Consultant Clinical Nutritionist & Metabolic Health Specialist, tells Moneycontrol that rice water is a supportive wellness addition, not a miracle cure. While it has its benefits, excessive or improper use can lead to digestive issues, blood sugar fluctuations, and skin reactions. Therefore, it's essential to know how to consume it and in what quantities.

Rice water is popular for its digestive-health benefits. Its starch content can help alleviate mild diarrhoea, dehydration, and stomach upset. In moderation, it can be easily absorbed and provide relief, especially when you’re unwell or recovering from an illness.
Fermented rice water can introduce good bacteria to support gut health when prepared hygienically. Its low electrolyte content can also aid hydration, particularly in hot climates.
Topically, rice water is said to smooth the skin, calm irritation, and strengthen the skin barrier. Its antioxidants may help protect the skin from environmental damage, and its starches can give the skin a temporary tightening effect, making it appear smoother.
Rice water has traditionally been used to promote long, thick, and shiny hair. Some users claim it reduces breakage and strengthens hair, although scientific evidence is limited.

Despite its benefits, rice water may not be suitable for everyone. Regular consumption could cause a rapid increase in blood sugar levels, especially for those with diabetes or insulin resistance. Improper fermentation could lead to the growth of harmful bacteria, causing gastrointestinal infections.
Overuse or improper storage of rice water can clog pores or irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin.
Consume rice water in moderation.
Avoid daily, long-term use without medical advice.
Ensure hygienic preparation and storage.
Perform a patch test before applying it to your skin or hair.
If you are immunocompromised, avoid fermented rice water.
When used mindfully and with caution, rice water can offer mild health and cosmetic benefits. However, it should complement, not replace, a healthy diet and evidence-based skincare.
