Green tea has numerous health benefits and is recognized as one of the healthiest drinks in the world. Packed with antioxidants, especially catechins, it has been linked to better metabolism, improved heart health and even brain function. Most people also take it for its potential to aid in weight management, detoxification and overall wellness. All of these benefits make green tea an everyday staple in the diet of health-conscious people around the world.

But while green tea is often hailed as a health beverage, it doesn't suit everyone. As with many natural foods and beverages, it’s full of active compounds that can have a range of effects on the body depending on a person’s health status, medication use and tolerance levels. Its caffeine content, tannins and bioactive compounds may sometimes produce undesired side effects or interact with some medical conditions.

As with all things, understanding when green tea is not the ideal option for you will assist you in keeping up with overall health without unnecessary risks.

As green tea has many health benefits, some people need to stop or limit the intake of it due to adverse health effects they can cause, says Delhi-based Dr Rahul Sharma, Clinical Nutritionist and Senior Consultant, Vinayak Healthcare.

People sensitive to caffeine

While green tea has less caffeine than coffee, it still contains enough to influence those who are sensitive to stimulants. Sensitive individuals may have symptoms of restlessness, anxiety, rapid heartbeat or difficulty sleeping after drinking tea green.

Individuals already suffering from insomnia or nervousness can experience worsened symptoms with green tea, particularly if taken in high dosages or later in the day.

Individuals with Iron Deficiency

Tannins in green tea can inhibit the absorption of iron from non-heme, plant-based foods. This can be especially worrying in those that are already low on iron, or are at the risk for iron deficiency anemia.

Frequent consumption of green tea with or right after a meal can negatively impact the body’s ability to absorb vital nutrients, which may eventually lead to iron deficiency over time if not watched.

Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women

Moderation is particularly essential for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Green tea contains caffeine, which is capable of crossing the placenta during pregnancy and potentially affecting the developing fetus if consumed in high amounts.

Furthermore, consuming more than the recommended amount of caffeine when pregnant can potentially lead to complications such as low birth weight or sleep problems in infants.

People with certain digestive issues

People with acidity can experience some problems after drinking green tea, especially on an empty stomach. Tannins in green tea can promote the production of stomach acid, resulting in a feeling of nausea or discomfort. People who suffer from caffeine-sensitive acid reflux or gastritis may find their symptoms react negatively to drinking green tea.

Individuals Taking Certain Medications

Green tea can also interact with some medications, including blood thinners, stimulants and certain heart medications. Such interactions may change how the drugs function or how the body responds to them.

And since green tea can have an effect on prescription medications, those taking such medicines should check with a medical professional before having it regularly.
