At a party, do you find yourself picking up a glass, then another, and before you know it, you've lost count? The buzz feels great until the room starts to spin, and you’re left wondering how you ended up feeling this way, again. Maybe it’s the headache that greets you the next morning or the regret of a night that went too far.

While a drink or two can be enjoyable, it's easy to slip into the trap of excessive drinking, especially in social settings. Limiting your alcohol intake isn’t just about avoiding a hangover; it’s about protecting your health, both now and in the future.

When you drink too much alcohol, the effects are not limited to a rough morning. Alcohol is processed by the liver, which can only handle small amounts at a time. The excess alcohol travels through your bloodstream, impacting other organs and leading to both immediate and long-term health risks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shares the serious consequences of drinking too much. Excessive alcohol use can cause liver damage, increase your risk of heart disease, and contribute to high blood pressure. Overtime, it can also lead to mental health issues, weaken your immune system, and increase your risk of certain cancers. Drinking less not only prevents a hangover, it can also significantly reduce your risk of these life-threatening conditions.

Here are 6 ways to prevent excessive drinking and staying sober:

Choose drinking days: One effective way to manage your alcohol intake is by designating specific days for drinking and sticking to them. For example, if you decide that Friday night is your night to have a drink, then skip the alcohol on other days, even if you’re out at a party or social event. This helps you develop a habit of moderation and keeps drinking from becoming a habit.

Select supportive friends: No, not the ones who challenge you to take just one more drink, but those ones who stop you from doing so. The people you surround yourself with can have a big influence on your drinking habits. When heading to a party or gathering, go with friends who won’t pressure you into drinking more than you’re comfortable with. Surrounding yourself with supportive, like-minded people can make it easier to stick to your limits.

Opt for alternatives: When you’re at a party, it’s easy to reach for an alcoholic drink just because it’s there. Instead, consider choosing a non-alcoholic option like a fresh juice, soda, or mocktail. These alternatives can be just as enjoyable and refreshing, without the potential health risks associated with alcohol.

Consider consequences: Before you reach for that extra drink, take a moment to think about the repercussions. Will it affect how you feel tomorrow? Could it lead to behaviour you’ll regret? Visualising the negative outcomes of excessive drinking can help you make better choices in the moment.

Pause before saying yes: When someone offers you another drink, don’t immediately say yes. Instead, count to 50 in your head. This brief pause gives you a chance to consider whether you really want another drink or if you’re just going along with the crowd. Often, this small delay is enough to help you make a more mindful decision.

Challenge yourself: Try to hold onto the same drink for longer periods of time. By sipping slowly and savoring each drink, you can avoid the temptation to keep refilling your glass. This strategy not only helps you control your intake but also allows you to enjoy the social aspect of drinking without overindulging.
