The festive celebrations may be over, but the abundance of sweets available at home and gatherings with friends and family can still pose a challenge for your health.  Besides, for those who are managing high blood sugar, the temptation to continue eating the sweets can lead to blood sugar spikes.

High or low blood sugar levels can sometimes be dangerous and lead to serious health issues if not managed well. According to multiple studies monitoring blood sugar helps people see patterns in how their blood sugar changes in response to things like food, exercise, medications, and health conditions such as diabetes.

Dr Meenakshi Mohan, Consultant Pathologist, Neuberg Pulse Diagnostics, Kolkata, shares some practical tips and essential tests to help maintain balanced blood sugar levels:

  • Practice portion control: After the festivities, it’s easy to indulge in leftover sweets and snacks. The key is moderation. Opt for smaller portions of sweets and traditional delicacies. It helps to prioritize low-glycemic foods, like nuts and fruits, over sugar-loaded treats to minimize blood sugar spikes.

  • Avoid skipping meals: Skipping meals to “save calories” can lead to overeating later. Instead, stick to your regular meal schedule to prevent blood sugar fluctuations. A healthy snack, like a handful of almonds or a bowl of yogurt, can help curb cravings and keep energy levels steady.

  • Stay hydrated: Water aids digestion and can reduce cravings. Drinking sufficient water also helps flush out excess sugar from the blood. Avoid sugary drinks and sodas, which can spike blood sugar levels.

  • Essential blood sugar tests: Frequent blood sugar testing is important, especially after indulgent times. The Fasting Blood Sugar Test provides a snapshot of your glucose levels after an overnight fast, while the HbA1c Test measures average blood glucose over the past three months. These tests can reveal the impact of post-festive eating habits and guide future dietary choices.
