Kidneys are small organs with mighty power, filtering waste products, retaining the correct number of fluids, managing blood pressure, and producing hormones that help create red blood cells. Consuming a balanced diet of foods with nutrients can lower the risk of kidney damage and support those living with kidney disease. Drinking adequate fluids and managing sodium are essential as well, but there are certain foods that are believed to improve kidney function naturally.

Dr Aarav Menon, Clinical Nutritionist and Wellness Coach from Mumbai, suggests these eight healthy foods you should consider in your daily diet:

1. Cauliflower

A great detoxifier, cauliflower belongs to the cruciferous vegetable family and is full of vitamin C, potassium, fibre, and anti-inflammatory elements including indoles. Additionally, these compounds support the body's detoxification systems, allowing the kidneys to more effectively filter and eliminate wrist toxins. It is also very low in potassium making it a great vegetable to eat while you are following a renal diet. Cauliflower can be steamed, mashed or roasted, it is incredibly versatile and can fit into any regimen as a healthy kidney vegetable.

2. Red grapes

Full of antioxidants, red grapes are a \good source of hydration. They are also full of antioxidants, flavonoids and resveratrol. These antioxidants can reduce inflammation and combat oxidation that can damage the kidneys. Red grapes are also low glycemic, which is perfect for kidney patients who may have heart issues because of the link between heart disease and disease.

3. Blueberries

A superfood for your kidneys, blueberries are among the best antioxidant-rich foods that contains vitamins C and K, fiber, and anthocyanins, which protect the kidneys by minimising inflammation and oxidative stress. They are low in sodium, phosphorus, and potassium, making them a good thing to eat if your goal is to protect kidney function or to keep it from getting worse.

4. Cabbage

Low in Potassium, high in benefits, cabbage is a leafy green high in vitamins B6, C, and K. It is also high in insoluble fibre. Cabbage contains phytochemicals that help break apart free radicals, making it helpful for reducing strain on the kidneys. Because cabbage is low in potassium, it is particularly helpful for those with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to use as part of a balanced and low-potassium diet.

5. Olive oil

Olive oil is a great addition to your diet because it consists of monounsaturated fats and polyphenols, both of which are good at reducing inflammation. It also has no phosphorus, making it an excellent option for individuals with kidney issues. Instead of using other saturated sources of fat, such as butter or margarine, using olive oil can relieve some of the burden on your kidneys while promoting heart health.

6. Egg whites

Egg whites are a great source of high-quality protein and are very low in phosphate, making them an ideal protein source for people with kidney issues. Protein is essential for muscle building and tissue repair, however, the egg yolk is filled with phosphorus which can cause additional stress on the kidneys. Focusing on only egg whites allows you to meet your protein need without overwhelming your body with phosphorus.
