Acidity has become a fairly common complaint in this day and age. While it may appear to be a benign issue, it can take a turn for the worse; leading to peptic ulcers in the stomach. Chronic acid reflux (often called heartburn) may be indicative of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). It can be associated with pain in the abdomen as well.

Keeping your gastric health in check is important to avoid further complications. Here are some home remedies for acidity:

Aloe vera juiceAloe vera contains compounds like polysaccharides and glycoproteins that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on the gastrointestinal tract. Drinking aloe vera juice may help reduce inflammation in the stomach and provide relief from acidity. It may also promote healing of the stomach lining.

Apple cider vinegarMixing one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water before meals may help balance stomach acid levels. Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which is believed to aid digestion by increasing the acidity of the stomach. Avoid excessive consumption as it can erode tooth enamel and aggravate certain gastrointestinal conditions. Use it in moderation and dilute it properly.

Bananas: Bananas are naturally low in acid and contain substances like potassium and pectin, which can help coat the stomach lining and reduce irritation caused by excess acid. Nevertheless, bananas may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with latex allergies or certain medical conditions like diabetes.

Buttermilk: Buttermilk, often enjoyed in summer to beat the heat, is also effective in reducing acidity. It contains lactic acid, which neutralises stomach acid, providing relief from acidity. The probiotics in buttermilk promote healthy gut bacteria, improving digestion and reducing the likelihood of acid reflux. Additionally, its cooling effect can soothe the stomach lining, reducing irritation and discomfort.

Chamomile tea: Chamomile contains compounds like flavonoids and terpenoids that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects, which can help soothe the stomach and alleviate acid reflux symptoms.

Cumin: These seeds are a beneficial remedy for acidity due to their digestive properties. They contain thymol, which stimulates the secretion of saliva, bile, and gastric juices, aiding digestion and preventing the buildup of excess stomach acid. Cumin seeds also have anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract and reduce symptoms of acidity and heartburn.

Fennel seeds: Chewing on a teaspoon of fennel seeds after meals can help prevent acidity and aid digestion. Fennel seeds contain compounds like anethole, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and carminative properties that can help reduce gas, bloating, and acid reflux symptoms. However, fennel may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with allergies to plants in the Apiaceae family.

Ginger: Ginger has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe the stomach lining and reduce acid reflux symptoms. It also promotes the movement of food through the digestive tract, aiding digestion. Chewing on a small piece of ginger or drinking ginger tea can provide relief from acidity.

Remember to consult with your doctor if you have chronic or severe acidity issues, as home remedies may not be suitable for everyone and could interact with medications or underlying medical conditions.
