Given the rising incidence of avian influenza, especially the H9N2 strain, it is critical to comprehend effective prevention measures and appropriate management techniques. Because H9N2 can infect humans, there is a serious risk to the public's health, so taking preventative measures to stop transmission is essential. Through prioritising prevention and preparedness, people can lessen the effects of H9N2 infection and protect their own and the public's health.

Here are some prevention strategies suggested by Dr Mohan Kumar Singh, senior consultant- internal medicine, Marengo Asia hospital, Gurugram

Avoid close contact: Reducing exposure to live poultry and bird markets can substantially lower the chance of contracting H9N2. Reduced human contact with birds and their surroundings can help reduce the risk of virus transmission.

Healthy hygiene practices: Hand cleaning is essential to avoiding H9N2 infection, especially after handling birds or their habitats. Maintaining good cleanliness lessens the chance of transmission and helps to eliminate any viral contaminants.

Use of protective gears: When working with birds, masks and gloves offer an extra line of defense against exposure to the H9N2 virus. By limiting direct contact with possible virus sources, these preventive steps lower the chance of infection.

Food safety measures: A key strategy for preventing H9N2 infection is to practice food safety. Cooking chicken and eggs thoroughly before eating makes sure that any viruses are gone, which lowers the chance of foodborne illness.

Management and treatment strategies, if infected

Antiviral medication: Antiviral drugs such zanamivir (Relenza) or oseltamivir (Tamiflu) must be taken as soon possible if a H9N2 infection is detected. By reducing the duration and severity of symptoms, these drugs increase the likelihood of a quick recovery.

Supportive care: To manage H9N2 infection efficiently, supportive care must be prioritised. Reducing fever, getting lots of rest, and drinking plenty of water all aid in symptom relief and the acceleration of healing.

Seek prompt medical attention: It is imperative to get medical assistance right once, particularly if symptoms get severe or breathing problems appear. Hospitalisation may be required in severe situations in order to provide critical care and breathing support.

Isolation and follow-up care

Following public health advice and keeping oneself isolated can help stop the H9N2 virus from spreading to other people. Furthermore, being in constant contact with your Dr for follow-up treatment guarantees appropriate recovery monitoring and symptom management.
