Many people swear by cardio exercises like swimming, cycling, walking, and running, among others, for more than one reason. They not only help in protecting your heart health but also with weight management. However, Cyrus Broacha, who is best known for shows like MTV Bakra and The Week That Wasn’t, said that it’s not for Indian men.
In a chat with Smita Prakash of ANI, Cyrus shared that cardio makes men look ugly and skinny. Instead, he highly recommended a mix of strength training and the right diet for the best results.

When Cyrus, who is quite enthusiastic about fitness, was asked if he was into cardio, he said, “No, no, I don't do it (cardio). You're saying bad words. Don't say cardio. I hate that word. Indian men don't do cardio. You'll just get uglier... they will never lose the belly (belly fat) because the blueprint is what it is. The hands will become skinny. The legs will become skinny... so they have to understand they have to lift weights and watch their diet. Cardio is of benefit only if you're really large... so (do) only strength training as we age for sure.”

He also admitted his love for training and humorously added that most trainers are in the business because they couldn’t get another job, just like him. When he was asked if he had undergone surgery like other Bollywood celebs, he dismissed it, saying, “I'm an old man.”

However, Cyrus quickly asked if she was talking about the three Khans—Shah Rukh, Aamir, and Salman. As a matter of fact, he pointed out, “They're not in that great shape. They're okay for their age for sure, but it's not like they're like 20-year-olds. Shah Rukh and Salman are very careful with their diet, as far as I know, which is the main thing as you age. But Shah Rukh is not rippled with muscle or something. He's just kept himself lean. Akshay (Akshay Kumar) is damn good. He's just lean. He doesn't look like he's going to, you know, be a bodybuilder or powerlifter.”

While what Cyrus said about cardio may not be entirely true, it is true that strength training certainly helps more as we age. It helps build and grow muscles and is best for staying in shape and fit.

FAQs on cardio vs strength training:

1. What’s the main difference between cardio and strength training?

Cardio improves heart and lung health through activities like running or cycling. Strength training builds muscle and bone density through weightlifting or resistance exercises.

2. Which is better for weight loss?

Cardio burns more calories during exercise, while strength training increases muscle mass, boosting metabolism and calorie burn at rest. A combination is most effective.

3. Can I do both on the same day?

Yes, but manage fatigue. You can separate sessions by a few hours or alternate focus to avoid compromising performance.

4. Which is better for heart health?

Cardio directly strengthens the heart and improves circulation. Strength training also benefits heart health by lowering blood pressure and improving metabolism.

5. How often should I do each?

Cardio: 3–5 times per week. Strength training: 2–4 times per week, covering all major muscle groups.
