Many of us are guilty of following trends and discovering new foods through Instagram reels, rarely peeking into our culture for seasonal eats. Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar gently reminded us to do so in her new Instagram video, where she talked about a green vegetable that has not got its due on social media.
It is none other than shepu, also known as dill leaves. It blends fennel, celery, and a hint of liquorice and is enjoyed for its distinct flavour and slightly bitter taste. Rujuta shared that it may not be having its moments on Instagram, but it’s worth trying. “Eat shepu. It’s the green vegetable that reels don’t show you. Shepu has been a traditional post-natal food in India,” she said.
This fragrant, feathery green vegetable, used as a herb, is known to be nutrient-dense and healthy. Rujuta said, “It’s known to improve sleep, reduce stress, boost energy, and prevent hair fall and damage.” This is because it is packed with essential vitamins and minerals. “Shepu, like the greens in this season that grow in your region, has flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals that improve hair and overall health,” she added.

It’s recommended for pregnant and lactating mothers for its high calcium and beta-carotene content.

Rujuta said, “Everything you need is not found on reels. Most of it is growing in the fields. Disconnect from tech overload and connect with farms. Good hair is within reach for everyone, but we are just guilty of looking for it in the wrong places.”
The nutritionist said many dishes can be made with shepu. “From theplas to parathas, bhajis, and even a sprinkle of flavour in your dals and curries. And for maximum hair benefits, pair it with Vitamin C and B12-rich foods. My go-to is shepu paratha with amla achaar and dahi. It is a game-changer for good hair days!”
