Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that leads to the degeneration and death of brain cells. It is the most common form of dementia, characterised by a gradual decline in memory, thinking, and reasoning skills. Early symptoms often include forgetfulness and confusion, which worsen over time, affecting daily functioning and independence.

Alzheimer's involves the accumulation of amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain, disrupting normal brain activity. As the disease progresses, patients experience severe cognitive impairment, difficulties with communication, and changes in behaviour. There is currently no cure, but treatments and lifestyle changes can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Neurologist Kavita Awasthi lists down 7 lifestyle changes to alleviate Alzheimer’s symptoms.

Healthy diet: A diet that includes a variety of nutrient-rich foods can have a positive impact on brain health. The Mediterranean diet, in particular, emphasises foods like:

  • Fruits and vegetables: Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, these help combat oxidative stress and inflammation.
  • Whole grains: Foods such as oats, brown rice, and whole wheat provide essential nutrients and fiber, which support overall health.
  • Healthy fats: Sources like olive oil, avocados, and nuts contain monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids, which are linked to better brain function and reduced risk of cognitive decline.
  • Fish: Especially fatty fish like salmon, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids, are known to support brain health and may help protect against Alzheimer’s.

Regular exercise: Physical activity has multiple benefits for brain health:
  • Improves blood flow: Exercise enhances blood circulation to the brain, which can help improve cognitive functions and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
