Vijay Varma completes filming of upcoming film Matka King, shares pic

On April 24, Vijay Varma took to his Instagram Stories to share an update about his upcoming project.

Actor Vijay Varma announced on Instagram on Thursday that the filming for his upcoming web series, Matka King, was complete.

The acclaimed director of Andry, Sairat, and Jhund, Nagraj Manjule, will be helming the crime thriller series.

On April 24, Vijay Varma took to his Instagram Stories to share an update about his upcoming project. He posted a photo of a cake designed like a matka (earthen pot) and captioned it "Matka King Wrapped," signaling the completion of the shoot.

Matka King is a fictional story set in 1960s Mumbai, centered around an ambitious cotton trader who seeks legitimacy and respect.

He creates a new gambling game called 'matka,' which quickly sweeps through the city, democratizing a space once exclusive to the wealthy and powerful, as described in the official synopsis. Prime Video had previously announced the start of filming for this highly anticipated crime thriller last year.

The fascinating life of Ratan Khatri serves as the inspiration for the web series. Fans are excitedly awaiting Vijay Varma's portrayal of this legendary character in the lead role, which is based on Khatri.

Originally from a Sindhi family, Ratan Khatri moved from Karachi, Pakistan, to India during the 1947 partition. Later, he gained notoriety as the Matka King, turning the gambling game matka, which had its start in Mumbai in 1962, into an enormous racket. A gripping plot that is sure to enthral viewers is created by Khatri's ascent to prominence and his legendary influence.

The series is being brought to life under the banner of Roy Kapur Films, with production handled by a team of acclaimed National Award winners—Siddharth Roy Kapur and Nagraj Manjule—alongside Gargi Kulkarni, Ashish Aryan, and Ashwini Sidwani. Nagraj Manjule also takes the director’s chair, while the writing credits go to Abhay Koranne in collaboration with Manjule.

Vijay is renowned for his exceptional roles in films like Gully Boy and Monsoon Shootout, as well as television series like Mirzapur, Dahaad, and IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack.
