Actor Rajpal Yadav has paid Rs 2.5 crore in connection with the Rs 9-crore cheque bounce case against him, his lawyer informed the Delhi High Court. The development comes as the actor remains lodged in Tihar Jail after the court adjourned the hearing on his interim bail plea.
According to his counsel, Bhaskar Upadhyay, a total of Rs 2.5 crore has been paid so far out of the outstanding amount. “Out of Rs 9 crore so far, Rs 2.5 crore have been given. Let’s see what the court decides on Monday,” the lawyer said, adding that he would meet his client in jail to discuss further steps regarding the payment.
The case pertains to a long-running cheque bounce and loan default matter. The initial debt amount was reportedly Rs 5 crore. However, with added interest, penalties and other charges over the years, the total payable sum rose to approximately Rs 9 crore.
On February 5, Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Delhi’s Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court rejected his plea seeking more time in the case. The court had earlier directed him to make payments in connection with seven cases filed against him. On February 2, the court noted that the actor was required to deposit Rs 1.35 crore in each of the seven cases and directed that the amount already deposited with the Registrar General be released in favour of the complainant.
In October 2025, two demand drafts of Rs 75 lakh each were deposited with the Registrar General. However, the court observed that an amount of Rs 9 crore still remained payable.
Explaining the situation, Rajpal Yadav’s lawyer said that negotiations were underway regarding a 2012 agreement linked to the dispute. “The money that was invested from the investment purpose has not been denied to. Earlier also when there was talk of money, the company had refused to take money. Negotiations are underway on the 2012 agreement, in which three months have already been served,” he said.
The counsel also stated that the payment would be made either directly to the complainant, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd, or deposited before the court, depending on legal directions. “I can’t say anything about who gave money to Rajpal Yadav, it is a family matter. I will personally go to the jail and tell him how it needs to be done,” he added.
Earlier, Rajpal Yadav’s counsel had assured the court that the outstanding amount would be paid to the complainant directly. On Thursday, the counsel submitted that the money would be deposited before the court.
The financial troubles reportedly escalated after the failure of Rajpal Yadav’s 2012 film Ata Pata Laapata, which marked his directorial debut. Following the film’s poor performance, the unpaid dues accumulated over time, eventually leading to legal action.
Rajpal Yadav, known for his roles in films such as Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Chup Chup Ke, Hungama, Garam Masala and Waqt: The Race Against Time, has faced mounting legal challenges in recent years due to the case.
Meanwhile, according to the actor’s manager, several prominent Bollywood celebrities, including Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn and Sonu Sood, have extended financial support to him during this difficult period.
The court is expected to take up the matter again on Monday, when it will consider further developments in the payment and decide on the actor’s interim bail plea.
