  • Yadav's old interview on nepotism resurfaces amid his legal troubles

Veteran actor Rajpal Yadav is back in the news, but this time for reasons far removed from punchlines and comic timing. On February 5, 2026, the actor surrendered at Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court rejected his last-minute plea seeking more time in a long-running cheque bounce and loan default case. The court directed Yadav to serve a six-month sentence, noting repeated violations of its earlier orders in a case that has stretched back to 2010.

The legal trouble stems from unpaid dues linked to his production venture Ata Pata Laapata. What reportedly began as a business loan eventually snowballed into liabilities close to Rs 9 crore after the film failed to recover costs. Over the years, the court observed that despite multiple opportunities, the actor did not comply with repayment directions, leading to the final order for incarceration.

As Yadav begins his sentence, an old interview of his on nepotism in Bollywood has resurfaced, adding an unexpected layer of irony and reflection to the moment.

Speaking to ANI earlier, the actor had offered a blunt and experience-driven view on the industry’s most contentious debate, insisting that nepotism, while often blamed, is not the deciding force behind lasting success.

“There is no nepotism. I want to speak very honestly,” Yadav had said. “Nepotism agar hota to Shah Rukh Khan sahab kaise hote, Rajpal Yadav kaise hote, Paresh Rawal kaise hote, Anupam Kher sahab kaise hote, Akshay Kumar sahab kaise hote, Johny Lever sahab kaise hote, Sanjeev Kumar sahab kaise hote, Rajesh Khanna sahab kaise hote, Dharmendra sahab kaise hote?”

The actor, who rose from theatre to become one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable character performers, stressed that he came with no industry backing. “In my family, nobody asked me to join Bollywood or theatre,” he said. “Mere khud mere mann mein aaya and I told my kids also… ki koi bhi khel mein aur cinema mein koi kisi ka jeewan nahi bana sakta.”

In a strikingly philosophical note, Yadav explained that while encouragement can be offered, the consequences of failure cannot be shielded. “Aapko dhakka de sakta hu, par dhakke ke baad jo patkhani khaoge usko mai bhi nahi bacha sakta,” he remarked, underlining the personal risk inherent in creative careers.

Addressing the argument that star children enjoy easier access, Yadav acknowledged the privilege of exposure but rejected the idea that it guarantees longevity. “If you are a player, your kid will get a chance to play,” he said. “But woh chalega ki nahi chalega, kar paayega ki nahi kar paayega, woh urza hai ya nahi hai, woh decide karta hai ya to uparvala ya audience.”

Drawing from his own long career, he added, “I have been acting for 38 years now. And I have at least 200 relatives. Mai to ek ko bhi nahi karva paaya. Blessings apni apni, mehnat apni hai, and finally it is the audience who decides.”

As Rajpal Yadav serves his sentence, his earlier words now echo with a harsher realism. Success, as he once argued, may be shaped by talent and public acceptance, but personal choices, financial discipline, and accountability operate by a far less forgiving script.
