Rajkummar Rao, who is gearing up for his highly anticipated film, Maalik, has delivered a series of hits, cementing his status as a versatile actor. The actor recently recalled his audition days and how casting directors used to keep him in a box.
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Rajkummar talked about the Maalik trailer and revealed that one line from it resonates with him.
In the trailer, the actor’s character advises him not to try to be something he's not born to be. The actor reflects on how this mirrors his own early career experiences, where people tried to typecast him
Rajkummar recalled, “In Mumbai, when I started and met casting directors and asked them, 'Can I audition for the lead part,' they would ask me why.”
He added, “Audition for this role, teen scene hain toh (it's got three good scenes)." And the actor says he would just soldier on, steadfast in his belief that "maybe somebody would one day want me to audition for the lead role."
However, Rajkummar Rao eventually bagged his breakthrough role in Dibakar Banerjee’s Love Sex Aur Dhokha, followed by Shahid. He added, “And then Kai Po Che, a big commercial film, opened more doors for me.”
Maalik also stars Manushi Chhillar in the key role. The upcoming gangster drama is expected to be a gripping story about a man's rise to power in the underworld. The film is based on social issues and is expected to be full of action and adventure.
Maalik will hit the theatres on July 11.
