Rajkummar Rao confirms playing the lead in Sourav Ganguly's biopic: "It's a huge responsibility"

The Stree 2 actor acknowledged that he was "extremely nervous" about playing such a significant role, but he also said he was excited about the challenge that lay ahead.

Rajkummar Rao has officially confirmed that he will be portraying former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly in the much-anticipated biopic.

In an interview with NDTV, Rajkummar addressed the long-standing speculation, saying, “Now that Dada has already said it, let me also make it official – yes, I am playing him in his biopic.”

The Stree 2 actor acknowledged that he was "extremely nervous" about playing such a significant role, but he also said he was excited about the challenge that lay ahead. In order to give his portrayal authenticity, Rajkummar revealed that he is dedicated to perfecting every detail, including learning the Bengali accent.

Sourav Ganguly himself confirmed Rajkummar’s casting and praised the decision, saying, “I think the right person is doing it... I'll help him with everything. Rajkummar has been locked for the film. I don't think anyone else can play me better than him.”

One of India's most successful cricket captains, Ganguly, who played for the nation from 1992 to 2008, disclosed that the movie will start production in January 2026 and be released in theatres in December of the same year.

Renowned director Vikramaditya Motwane will direct the biopic, which is anticipated to include a number of well-known Bengali actors. According to reports, filming will start later this July, with key scenes to be filmed in Kolkata and England, though specific plot details are still being kept under wraps.

Meanwhile, on the professional front, Rajkummar Rao is also gearing up for his upcoming gangster action thriller Maalik, adding yet another exciting project to his diverse slate.
