Veteran actor Rahul Dev has spoken publicly for the first time about the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding the death of his younger brother, actor Mukul Dev. Mukul passed away on May 23, 2025, in New Delhi at the age of 54. At the time, no official cause of death was disclosed, prompting speculation and unverified reports, many of which linked the tragedy to depression.
Now, in a candid interview with The Times of India, Rahul Dev has shed light on what truly happened, putting an end to the swirling rumors. According to him, Mukul's death was not due to any diagnosed illness, but rather the result of a prolonged decline in self-care and emotional withdrawal.
“He was in the ICU for eight and a half days. Medically, it was a result of poor eating habits. In the last four-five days, he had stopped eating altogether,” Rahul revealed. “Of course, he felt lonely, and he had lost interest in life... He would turn down several work offers.”
Rahul described how Mukul, once active and known for his charm and wit, had gradually become a recluse after moving to Delhi in 2019 to care for their ailing parents. The emotional burden appeared to take its toll. “He became a loner,” Rahul said, adding that his brother’s detachment was not noticed by many. “Only now, after completing all the rituals, is the reality sinking in — and I know the pain will only deepen.”
Addressing the media reports suggesting Mukul was battling depression, Rahul expressed frustration over the speculative nature of the claims and the people making them. “The people who are speaking out now weren't even in touch with him. They say he was unfit, but he ran half-marathons. Yes, he had gained weight — when someone stops caring about themselves, it shows,” he said pointedly. “Who really stayed in touch with him between 2019 and 2024? Did they visit him when he was in the hospital or attend his prayer meet?”
Despite the sorrow and disillusionment, Rahul emphasized that he wants his brother to be remembered for the person he truly was — full of life, brilliance, and depth. “I want to remember my brother not as a man who faded away,” he said, “but as the super charming, intelligent, and sensitive person he truly was.”
Mukul Dev had a prolific career in both television and cinema, with roles in Gharwali Uparwali, Kumkum, Yamla Pagla Deewana, and R… Rajkumar. His passing is not just a personal loss for the Dev family, but a poignant reminder of the unseen emotional struggles many face.
