Fahadh Faasil mobile phone sparks frenzy

Recently, a video of Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil using an old-fashioned keypad phone went viral on social media, generating interest and admiration.

In a time when smartphones and constant online presence rule, the actor was seen embracing a vintage gadget in the video, which was shot during a puja ceremony for his upcoming movie Mollywood Times on July 16.

Fans were once again reminded of Fahadh's unique approach to technology, which is characterised by his low-key lifestyle and avoidance of social media.

According to a detailed report by Hindustan Times, the phone in question is no ordinary keypad model. It is the Vertu Ascent Retro Classic, a luxury handset crafted by the UK-based brand Vertu, famous for its premium, handcrafted mobile phones. Launched in 2008, this exclusive model is priced at an astounding USD 11,920 (a little over ₹10 lakh) and is currently out of stock on the brand’s official website.

The Vertu Ascent Retro Classic blends contemporary features with vintage charm. Its titanium body is finished with hand-stitched leather and sapphire crystal glass to protect the keys and display. It has Bluetooth, GPRS, SMS, and MMS capabilities despite its retro appearance.

One notable feature is the concierge service, which is available around-the-clock in more than 170 countries and can be accessed through a discrete side button. The phone is a distinctive combination of luxury and functionality, weighing 173 grammes, having a patented bevelled stainless-steel keypad, and measuring roughly 22 millimetres thick.

Fahadh Faasil’s preference for such a device aligns with his well-documented minimalist lifestyle. In June, fellow Malayalam actor Vinay Forrt spoke about Fahadh’s simple and grounded approach to technology during an interview on Club FM.

He said the Joji actor “avoids smartphones and social media entirely, and prefers using a basic keypad phone.” While Forrt did not reveal the phone’s brand, Fahadh’s recent appearance with the Vertu handset has led many to believe this is his regular choice.

In an age of digital saturation, Fahadh Faasil’s deliberate choice to shun smartphones and social media stands out, reflecting both his personal values and a refreshing break from the norm.
