Humans in the Loop now streaming on Netflix: Aranya Sahay’s powerful take on the hidden human labor behind AI

The critically acclaimed film Humans in the Loop, directed by Aranya Sahay, has begun streaming worldwide exclusively on Netflix starting October 31. Hailed for its sensitive and thought-provoking narrative, the film explores the intersection of technology, labor, and humanity through the eyes of an Adivasi woman in rural India. U.S. audiences will gain access to the film from November 10.

Backed by Storiculture’s Impact Fellowship and Sauv Films, and supported by the Museum of Imagined Futures, Humans in the Loop follows a young Adivasi woman employed at a data-labelling center where she trains artificial intelligence systems. Through her personal and cultural lens, the film questions what it means to be “in the loop” — not just technically, but emotionally and ethically — as human hands and hearts power the seemingly autonomous world of AI.

The project brings together an impressive team. It is executive produced by National Award-winning filmmaker Biju Toppo and acclaimed producer-director Kiran Rao, who were both instrumental in guiding the film’s theatrical and festival journey.

Kiran Rao shared her admiration for the project, saying, “From the very first time I saw Humans in the Loop, I was moved by its honesty and vision. It speaks to the invisible labour that powers our modern world—with such tenderness and urgency. I’m thrilled that the film will now find a global home on Netflix, reaching audiences everywhere who will see a part of themselves in its story.”

Director Aranya Sahay echoed that sentiment, adding, “Being on Netflix feels like a powerful next step for Humans in the Loop. The film was always meant to start conversations about the invisible human labor that builds AI, and Netflix gives us the opportunity to take that dialogue to a truly global audience.”

A festival favorite and multiple award-winner, Humans in the Loop earned the prestigious FIPRESCI India Award and has been celebrated internationally for its nuanced exploration of technology, ethics, and representation. Its global Netflix release cements the film’s place as a landmark piece in the evolving conversation about the real humans behind artificial intelligence.
